Reason for Request: *
Please explain in detail your request for funding. Why is this project needed? How will funds/project improve the quality of life for Emeryville residents? Project Overview:

We are applying for funding to create a mural featuring a green heron with a single delta smelt in its beak. This mural aims to raise awareness about the rapidly disappearing delta smelt, a keystone species crucial to the health of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem. This directly impacts the ecological balance here, in the Bay Area. Through this artistic endeavor, we seek to engage and educate the Emeryville community about the importance of preserving biodiversity and the delicate balance of our local ecosystems.

Why is this project needed?
The delta smelt is an indicator species whose decline signals broader ecological issues within the Delta. Its dwindling population reflects the degradation of water quality, habitat loss, and the impacts of climate change. By bringing attention to the plight of the delta smelt through art, we hope to inspire action and advocacy for the protection and restoration of its habitat.

The mural will serve as a visual reminder of the interconnectedness of all species and ecosystems, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts in maintaining ecological balance. Through public art, we have the opportunity to spark conversations and foster a sense of stewardship for our natural environment.

How will funds/project improve the quality of life for Emeryville residents? • Education and Awareness: The mural will serve as an educational tool, encouraging dialogue among residents, fostering a deeper understanding of local biodiversity and the importance of environmental conservation. • Beautification and Civic Pride: Public art has the power to transform public spaces, making them more vibrant and inviting. The green heron mural will add beauty and character to the Emeryville landscape, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood and instilling a sense of civic pride among residents. • Environmental Advocacy: By raising awareness about the green heron, the delta smelt and their habitat, the mural will inspire residents to become advocates for environmental conservation. It will encourage individuals to take action to protect local ecosystems and support policies that promote sustainability and habitat restoration.

In conclusion, the Green Heron Mural Project offers a unique opportunity to combine art with environmental advocacy, engaging and empowering the Emeryville community to take an active role in preserving biodiversity and protecting our natural heritage. We believe that this project will not only beautify our city but also inspire positive change for the benefit of current and future generations. We are grateful for your consideration and support.
