I have been a practicing Planner for 8 years and I am a former Peace Corp. volunteer where I was stationed in Senegal, West Africa as a community economic development volunteer. In my professional experience, I have entitled small and large projects but have mainly focused on policy and long-range planning.
Why are you interested in serving on this Board, Commission or Committee? My focus and my interest in serving for the Planning Commission is rooted in my desire to make Emeryville a better place for all people to live, visit and work. I would like to see Emeryville continue to positively grow and reach its full potential.

Please provide a short (300 words or less) statement discussing your ideas and attitudes about planning in Emeryville. Please consider issues such as traffic, industrial and commercial development density, affordable housing, maintaining community diversity and jobs/housing balance.
In my opinion, I see the City of Emeryville as a progressive leader in planning because of its innovative community benefit program and early and compliant Housing Element. Emeryville is building and planning for housing that is dense, affordable and transit-oriented, which lowers VMT and ultimately lowers emissions for the region. As for congestion, it is important to manage wisely for quality of life and must be analyzed as part of larger development.
Emeryville is a hot spot of industrial and commercial development and can be an emerging leader, particularly in life science and research and development sector. This sector, although lower in jobs per square footage than the typical commercial office building, is a growing sector. Employees earn high salaries and have a need to be near their employer. Jobs/Housing imbalance is a metric that was popular in determining a City';s fiscal health but may not be so important in the future due to changes in the nature of work since the pandemic. I believe that finding a new metric will be important for Emeryville in the future.
In summary, my ideas are aligned with Emeryville's progressive planning initiatives. The city's strategic focus on housing, transportation, and economic development position itself as a forwardthinking leader in urban sustainability and community well-being, however changes to metrics and updates are required to adapt for the future.
