Lyndes amended the motion, Blackwell seconded to provide direction to the Parks and Recreation Commission to add to their work plan the goal of recommending a name and possible future uses for the city land located on the northeast corner of Highway 101 and La Costa Avenue including the following clarifications for the Commission’s consideration: 1) focus on creating a solid and meaningful interest in partnering with indigenous people, the tribes that have been identified by our public speakers - the Kumeyaay and Payómkawichum - and the broader tribal community that we would traditionally reach out to; and 2) focus on creating a partnership for managing and/or stewarding this site as a traditional cultural/ecological property, and along with that would come a name that would be representative of what this property is to the tribes; and 3) include feasibility of a viewpoint and pathways; coordinate parking off-site. Motion Carried.
Ayes: Blackwell, Ehlers, Kranz, and Lyndes. Nays: None. Absent: Hinze.
Abstain: None.
There was City Council consensus to direct the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Staff to: 1) work with the Tribal Councils as well as the speakers to arrange a November event in honor of Native American Heritage Month at Pacific View to include a blessing of the facility; and 2) look at longer term ways to better incorporate Native American culture and history into our City and the region.
