Dear Encinitas Council Members,
As a fan of skateboarding and an old school skater, very old, (1960s Era Skateboarding Hall of Fame Inductee 2021) , I would like to encourage the Encinitas Council to find another spot for a new skate park. For 2 years I lived on Norfolk Dr in front of Glen Park and appreciated the quiet beauty and recreation afforded by this wonderful park. A skateboarding arena would destroy the area's tranquility, and parking is already limited.

Besides, we have a fabulous skate park located centrally. It is critical to maintain peace and safety for young children through elders in Cardiff. A skate park in Glen Park will NOT do that!
Sincerely,
Colleen Turner

Dear Council Member Lyndes,
First, thank you for your service on the Encinitas City Council and for looking out for all of our best interests. As a long-term resident of Cardiff, I feel compelled to reach out regarding a new skate park in Encinitas. While I am supportive of creating and maintaining outdoor spaces where kids and adults can gather, exercise and enjoy SoCal living, the location of such venues requires careful consideration. It has come to my attention that Glen Park is being considered for a new skate park. I am strongly opposed to this location for the following reasons:

1. Compromised safety: car and pedestrian traffic near the Chesterfield and San Elijo intersection is already challenging. The roads circling Glen Park are narrow and lack sidewalks. Additional traffic would be dangerous for the many families with young children and dog walkers who frequent the park daily.

2. Insufficient parking: it is important that any new location have ample areas for parkgoers and skateboarders to park. The parking lot that exists in Glen Park is tiny. Many of the curbs surrounding Glen Park are red given the narrow roadway. As previously mentioned, this area of Cardiff lacks sidewalks – additional traffic will increase risks to pedestrians.

3. Noise: except for a 7-Eleven, this area of Cardiff is residential and relatively quiet.

Skate parks are notoriously noisy and should be placed in non-residential areas.

4. Overwhelming Glen Park: the existing park already has numerous sports features and is a popular destination for birthday celebrations and small gatherings given the concrete picnic tables, BBQs, playground, and open space. Another concrete sports structure would reduce the limited green space that currently exists and be detrimental to the birds and animal life living in the gorgeous trees.

5. Better options exist: the Encinitas Community Park is a perfect example of a large venue with ample parking and located near an already noisy freeway. Expanding the existing skate facility there or finding another location with similar attributes would be far preferable to cramming a disruptive skate park into Glen Park.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of these issues, and I am confident you will find another safe and appropriate place for the new venue.

Best regards,
Lisa Walters-Hoffert

Dear Council Member Lyndes,
Thank you for your service to our town and for keeping residents' best interests in mind.

As a Cardiff resident living two blocks from Glen Park, I appreciate the quiet neighborhood atmosphere of the park surrounded by homes and enjoyed for mostly passive recreation. I am strongly opposed to the Glen Park location for a potential skate park.

Locating a skate park in this neighborhood would compromise safety, with increased traffic and insufficient parking. It would also bring increased noise to an area that is largely residential. Finally, a skate park in this small neighborhood park would overwhelm the existing space, which is not very large, especially the open lawn areas that are used and enjoyed by neighbors. Better options exist in town, and I encourage you to pursue these instead of Glen Park. While I am supportive of creating and maintaining outdoor gathering and recreation spaces for adults and children, I ask you to please oppose Glen Park as a potential skate park location and seek other solutions.

Best,
