ITEM NO. ______
COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM
FOR JUNE 17, 2024
Prepared By: Jaylen French, Interim City Manager
Date: June 7, 2024
Subject: Confirm Selection of Jonathon ‘Jonnie’ Cabello as the City of Escalon Poet Laureate 2024
RECOMMENDATION:
Confirm Selection of Jonathon ‘Jonnie’ Cabello as the City of Escalon Poet Laureate 2024.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
In November 2023, the Escalon City Council accepted a three-year grant from the San Joaquin Community Foundation (SJCF) to establish a Poet Laureate program in the City and directed staff to release an open application period for a Poet Laureate. The period opened on January 16, 2024 and closed on February 16, 2024. The City received two applications from individuals who wanted to participate in, and volunteer for, the program, but not be the Poet Laureate. Subsequently, the City was connected with Mr. Cabello, who applied, submitted original works of poetry and is being recommended by staff to fill the Poet Laureate position.
According to his application, Mr. Cabello is an English teacher at Escalon High School and desires to be the City’s poet laureate to bring a love and passion for all things writing and literature. He believes the community could benefit from programs and events aimed toward written and spoken word.
SJCF is a philanthropic organization that connects interested donors to local causes, connects community stakeholders, accelerates non-profit work and helps to build capacity in non-profits, with the goal to improve the community.
Cities throughout the State and Nation have established Poet Laureate programs to inspire the local youth to establish a life-long appreciation of literature, and to remind the community about the importance of literature and poetry. The SJCF Board of Directors believes that a poet laureate program also invests in each city’s human capital and talent to build its capacity for advocacy for reading and literary arts. In 2020, the SJCF Board approved funding for, and set a goal to establish, a Poet Laureate Program in each city in San Joaquin County. Since then, the programs have launched in 5 of the 7 cities, with conversations ongoing in Lathrop and Escalon. 5 34 of 313
