Etna Police Department Monthly Report
March 2024
Happy Spring everyone. It's been a busy couple of months so far this year with many positive happenings throughout our community. As the weather stays warm it gives us all a chance to settle into warmer weather activities and enjoy the benefits of living in Scott Valley. Safety is our main concern, and we will stay vigilant to make sure everyone can enjoy their summer months without a worry.

Traffic- Along with our daily patrol of regulating traffic and making drivers aware of our presence, several violators have been ticketed for a multitude of traffic violations. Key areas are Main Street and areas adjacent to school properties. We have scheduled walk audits with Cal-trans and other local agencies. The city will need to make educated decisions soon to adhere to new state laws impacting parking, pedestrians, and safe travel throughout town.

These changes will directly impact Main Street, so we look to make changes that best fit Etna and its constituents. If you would like to be part of the walk audit, please let us know.

Schools- If you can believe it, we only have a couple more months of school left in the year before summer break. We continue to work with schools daily, making sure any problems are foreseen and action can be taken to eliminate the issue all together or make its effects minimal.

Spring sports will be impacting our patrol as tournaments will be brought to town and the flow of traffic will be higher.

Animal Control- Knock on wood, our animal control calls for service have been on the lower end within the town. We have assisted county animal control on several animal control issues that have also impacted Etna residences. Fort Jones has now constructed their new kennels allowing them to house animals taken in by the department. This also eliminates officers from transporting animals to Etna when a problem arises. We are still looking at changing several ordinances related to animal control to update them and create a better practice for town issues.

R6pOrts/C3S6S- We now have over 30 written cases for the year and by the looks of it will be seeing an increase in service calls as we approach spring. With the increase of traffic throughout our valley comes the increase of citations written. I estimate between both towns, 5-10 citations are written each week to violators.

Calls for Service- Again, as we draw closer to spring and summer our calls for service will go up significantly. Numerous events such as rodeos, concerts, and gatherings will impact our scheduling and services provided. We hope to provide a fun and safe environment for all and look forward to these upcoming events.

Ordinance Enforcement- Kelly is continuing to work on several problematic code enforcement issues throughout town and will hopefully come to a successful conclusion with minimal interference. She is also working with the city attorney to update existing ordinances to better serve our community. If there is an issue that has been brought to you by a constituent, please send them our way so we can address the situation.

PAL- Wrestling season is upon us and going strong as we also prepare for the swim season. A new coach will be heading up the team and we look forward to an exciting season. PAL also provides a recreational swim team, enabling youth to enjoy swimming without the competition aspect. We also will be partnering with the YESS program in the summer giving our youth the ability to work and gain experience in land management. Our explorer program is regaining traction, and several youths are now in the program. Our explorer program is unique in that each member can participate In police, fire, and EMS.

Training- Officers continue to participate in advanced officer training both locally and out of the area. With each class comes the ability for our officers to become experts in their field, which in turn provides an unmatched service to our community.

Patrol Hours- The past several months has been active, and we will continue to see an uptick In activity as mentioned above. As a reminder the town of Etna, when fully staffed, receives patrol hours and time in the office more than 600 hours a month with 4 officers, 2 CSOs and a detective. Countless security checks, home checks, and business checks are made daily making sure our community is safe. encourage the City Council to participate In our ride along program to help educate yourselves on the daily activities that occur in our town. Not only is it a great way to see the town from another point of view but it also gives us the ability to establish good relationships with each other. In addition to the above hours of service we also benefit from our inclusion of NSMIT. It is often we have numerous officers and detectives taking part in a major crime event and contribute 100s of hours of police services to the City of Etna. These hours of service provided are highly expertise and unattainable without substantial financial cost.

CALL SUMMARY March 2024
Attached is the call summary and stats for the month of March to present. As mentioned at the last meeting, a new computer aided dispatch system will be put in place soon, making deciphering the calls much easier. The stats include the calls for service within each town as well as the outlying areas. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them during the meeting. If you would like anything else covered in my monthly reports, please let me know so I can make the proper adjustments.
