City Staff recommends that the City Council hold a workshop-style discussion to identify, refine, and prioritize Council goals and objectives for the upcoming year, and work toward narrowing the list to key goals for the City Council and staff to collaboratively pursue.

The purpose of the session is to engage in a focused discussion regarding the Council’s shortterm and long-term priorities, and to establish clear and actionable goals that will help guide policy direction, budget planning, and staff workplans.

The City has held similar goal-setting sessions in previous years and has found them to be a valuable tool for strategic alignment. While the City strives to conduct these sessions annually, this year’s meeting is particularly timely given the seating of the new City Council. It provides an ideal opportunity for the City Council to collectively establish shared priorities and set the tone for the coming year.

Staff recommends that, following discussion, the City Council work toward narrowing down the list of priorities to five key goals. These selected goals will serve as the City's strategic focus areas for the upcoming year, ensuring that both the Council and staff are aligned and able to make meaningful progress.

Agenda Item Number: D.1.

Department Recommendation:

Summary:

J.R.

Background:

City Council goal-setting sessions are a recognized best practice in municipal governance. They provide an opportunity for Councilmembers to reflect on the City’s accomplishments, respond to current challenges, and affirm or adjust the City’s direction in a collaborative setting.

The City has successfully conducted similar sessions in the past and aims to make this an annual practice to promote accountability, transparency, and strategic consistency. With a newly seated Council, this year’s session presents an excellent opportunity to establish a refreshed set of priorities and build a unified vision moving forward.

The outcomes of this session will help shape future agendas, inform budget development, and guide staff workplans throughout the year. Staff will also provide periodic updates on progress toward the identified goals.

Fiscal Impact:

There is no direct fiscal impact associated with holding this session, though adopted goals may influence future resource allocation decisions.
• None.

I move to adopt follow goals and objectives for the Council and staff to collaboratively work toward (City Council to establish list of goals).
