AGENDA ITEM #16

TOWN OF FAIRFAX

STAFF REPORT
April 6, 2022
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: Michele Gardner, Town Clerk
SUBJECT: Approve Display of the Ukraine Flag at Town Hall ______________________________________________________________________________

RECOMMENDATION
Approve displaying the Ukraine Flag at Town Hall for 30 days.

DISCUSSION
The Town has received a request to display the Ukraine flag in front of Town Hall as a show of support for the Ukraine people. There have been several other demonstrations of solidarity with Ukraine by other Marin municipalities.

Tiburon adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine. According to staff, the Ukrainian flag will be displayed above the police department for 30 days.

Novato posted a statement on its social media accounts announcing support for the Ukrainian people and community members who have family or friends in the region.

In San Rafael, Mayor Kate Colin and other councilmembers made remarks of support during their March 7th Council meeting.

To display the flag in front of Fairfax Town Hall, staff would use the flagpole mount on the front wall of the building, below the roofline above the front door. (The flagpole that stands in the grass in front of Town Hall and flies the American flag was turned over to the Ross Valley Fire Department to raise, lower, and fly at half-staff based on federal guidelines.) Staff plans to return to the Council with a flag policy to address any future flag requests.
