AGENDA ITEM #17

TOWN OF FAIRFAX

STAFF REPORT
June 1, 2022
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: Heather Abrams, Town Manager
SUBJECT: Adopt a Resolution Proclaiming June 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Approving Flying the Pride Flag at Town Hall for the Month of June ______________________________________________________________________________

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution Proclaiming June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Approving Flying the Pride Flag at Town Hall for the Month of June.

DISCUSSION
Mayor Hellman requested this matter be added to tonight’s agenda for the Council’s consideration.

The Spahr Center has reached out to Marin cities and towns, including Fairfax, to proclaim the month of June 2022 “LGBTQ+ Pride Month” and to fly the Pride flag in recognition and celebration during the month of June. June 22nd marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that gave rise to the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movements in the United States. Many towns and cities across the country now recognize and celebrate the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month. However, individuals of the LGBTQ+ community continue to live in fear and struggle to experience equality, justice, and the opportunity to prosper.

Several Marin jurisdictions, including the County of Marin, have adopted similar resolutions and authorized the flying of the Pride flag. The Marin County Board of Supervisors first adopted a Resolution Proclaiming June 22, 2019 as “Pride Day”, and in June 2020, adopted a Resolution Proclaiming the month of June 2020 as “Pride Month”. The Board of Supervisors authorized the flying of the Pride flag at the Civic Center Administration Building in recognition of Pride Month. In 2020, the County flew the Pride flag at all County facilities.

The Town of Fairfax first adopted a Resolution Proclaiming the Month of June 2021 as “Pride Month” and authorized the flying of the Pride flag.

FISCAL IMPACT
None. The Town has the Pride flag and flagpole from its first display in 2021.
