SPECIAL MEETING AGENDA ITEM #2
TOWN OF FAIRFAX
SPECIAL MEETING STAFF REPORT
July 6, 2022
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: Michele Gardner, Town Clerk
SUBJECT: Interview applicant Iris Waskaw for appointment to the Volunteer Board __________________________________________________________________________________
RECOMMENDATION
Interview applicant Iris Waskaw for appointment to the Volunteer Board.
DISCUSSION
There are currently three vacancies on the Volunteer Board, each for an unexpired term. One application has been received (attached) from Iris Waskaw, who recently attended a Volunteer Board meeting. Iris lives in unincorporated Fairfax, meaning within the Fairfax zip code area, but outside of Town limits. Currently, membership on the Volunteer Board is limited to residents of incorporated Fairfax. However, later on tonight’s agenda is a resolution for the Council’s consideration, to expand the Volunteer Board to include residents of unincorporated areas within the 94930-zip code area. Following that agenda item is the related item to appoint Iris Waskaw to the Volunteer Board, based on tonight’s interview and contingent on passing the resolution.
The Fairfax Volunteer Board is comprised of seven members who serve three-year terms.
Their mission is to foster goodwill in the Town of Fairfax through implementation of a volunteer program that will meet Town and community needs. They sponsor annual social events, such as the Town-wide summer picnic, which organizes neighborhood groups and the holiday potluck/caroling/wreath making event in December which promote a sense of goodwill in the community.

Please explain your interest in serving on this Board, Commission, or Committee.
Being of service and contributing to our community is my main goal. I believe that change is local and if we strive to have a healthy neighborhood it will lead to a healthy society. In these troubled times it is easy to become disillusioned, frustrated, and angry. Taking positive action is my way of warding off that feeling of hopelessness.
Please describe your relevant work/life experience or background for the board/commission you are applying for:
As a volunteer in Santa Monica, I was active in our neighborhood association. We worked on various projects with the city that ranged from :
toddler park renovation and new equipment purchases;
organizing yearly summer picnic and Halloween party in the park; installation of lighting in the park and on a dark and dangerous street; creation of a beautiful solar-lit and landscaped promenade that converted dismal alleyways into a showcase walk street;
organized a yearly "Boutique" that raised money for Planned Parenthood to provide women in need access to reproductive health care.
What is your vision for the Town of Fairfax?
As a newcomer - I've only been here since February 2021 - I think my initial contribution might be to bring a different perspective to the table based on my previous experiences in Santa Monica .
My vision will develop as I merge new local knowledge into the mix.
Please describe possible areas of conflict of interest.
