TOWN OF FAIRFAX PROCLAMATION
Designating September 2023
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men; and
WHEREAS, one in eight men have a lifetime probability of developing prostate cancer; and one in eight women also have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be 288,300 new cases of prostate cancer in the USA in 2023, resulting in an estimated 34,700 deaths; and WHEREAS, it is estimated 26,970 men in California will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and it is estimated 4,970 California men will die from this disease this year; and WHEREAS, the incidence of prostate cancer is more than 70% higher in Black men than White men for reasons that remain unclear; and
WHEREAS, risk factors for prostate cancer are increasing age, African ancestry, a family history of the disease, and certain inherited genetic conditions; and WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate approaches 100% when prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated early, but drops to 32% when it spreads to the other parts of the body; and WHEREAS, early-stage prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms; late-stage prostate cancer commonly spreads to the bones and causes pain in several areas of the body; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society recommends that men have a conversation with their health care provider and make an informed decision about whether to be tested for prostate cancer; and WHEREAS, the Fairfax Town Council joins communities across our nation to increase the awareness about the importance for men to make an informed decision with their health care provider about early detection and testing for prostate cancer;
Now, therefore, be it hereby proclaimed by the Town Council of the Town of Fairfax that the month of September 2023 is
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the Town of Fairfax.
