TOWN OF FAIRFAX PROCLAMATION
PROCLAIMING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
FEBRUARY OF 2024
WHEREAS, the Town of Fairfax hereby acknowledges and celebrates Black History Month, which began in 1926 as Black History Week, a celebration initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, noted Black scholar, historian, and son of former slaves. Black History Week was expanded to have February become Black History Month, now celebrated all over North America; and WHEREAS, The Black History Month theme for 2024 focuses African Americans and the Arts and the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans; and WHEREAS, for centuries Western intellectuals denied or minimized the contributions of people of African descent to the arts as well as history, even as their artistry in many genres was mimicked and/or stolen; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Fairfax acknowledges the tremendous struggles, triumphs, and contributions of African Americans from all walks of life and their endeavors to learn and thrive throughout history.
Making unforgettable marks in our Nation as artists, scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, profound thinkers, members of the faith community, athletes, political leaders, which all reflect the greatness of a resilient people. We all gain a fuller knowledge and appreciation for the influence, culture, and traditions that we embrace as a nation; an
WHEREAS, as we recognize and celebrate Black History Month, let us elevate the understanding and awareness that Black history should not only be recognized in February; it takes place every single day. We proudly exclaim that Black history is American history; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED by the Town Council of the Town of Fairfax that the month of February 2024 is Black History month, AND BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Fairfax Town Council invites the community to recognize this month to celebrate the diversity and character of our community and highlight the importance of sharing our culture, customs and traditions with those around us.
