Please pass a ceasefire resolution for Gaza
Amber Lane-Bortell <[email protected]>
Tue 4/30/2024 9:52 PM
To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Dear Fairfax Town Council,
I am writing to urge you to pass a ceasefire resolution for Gaza. According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, including over 15,000 children. Thousands more are injured and permanently disabled, and millions are displaced. The news coming out of Gaza, including mass graves found outside of hospitals with people executed with their hands zipped tied, only grows more and more horrific. It is impossible for us on the outside to truly comprehend how bad the situation is in Gaza. The International Court of Criminal Justice has called for a ceasefire and yet Israel's genocidal campaign against Gaza continues as they prepare to invade Rafah. There is no justification for this death and destruction. The violence has to stop. A permanent ceasefire is the only solution to prevent further suffering.

This violence may be happening across the world from us, but our tax money is going to fund this bloodshed, and that gives us all the responsibility to speak out. We all have power and a voice in this moment and we can use it to put pressure on our government to end this genocide. A world where we allow genocide to happen is not a world that is safe for everyone. This has to stop so we can build a future where everyone is safe. I implore you to pass a ceasefire resolution and take a stand against genocide.

Sincerely,
Amber Lane-Bortell
May 1st ceasefire resolution

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Dear Council Members.

I urge you to adopt a resolution that calls for both a ceasefire and a renewal of humanitarian support for UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees).

There is a terrible misconception among some misinformed people that calling for a ceasefire is necessarily an indication of support for Hamas and thus anti-Jewish. The simple truth is that calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid is a moral response to a tragic and horrific situation. It is simply a call to protect a beleaguered civilian population in Gaza that has been living under relentless bombs and is now on the brink of famine.

To be clear, as some of you know by now, I am Jewish, the grandson of a revered rabbi. It is a mistake to think of Israel as if it is the state of the Jews and therefore represents all Jews. To be clear, Zionism is not the same as Judaism and criticizing certain Israeli policies is not anti-Semetic.

I hope you will do the right thing and pass such a resolution. If I can be of help in any manner as to the content please feel free to contact me.

This is a critical moment and we need Fairfax to make a difference. We need to bring forward a resolution at the upcoming meeting this Weds and become the first brave elected body in marin to adopt a permanent ceasefire resolution. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinians and we demand a call to end the genocide, condemn the weaponizing of antisemitism, and stepping up to do what is right and what is the only moral response to the mass murdering of Palestinians by Israel. Please make a difference and put Fairfax on the right side of history!! Sincerely,

Dear Honorable Mayor and Councilmembers:

I am a father of two in neighboring San Anselmo. I understand the town of Fairfax is considering a resolution regarding Israel and the conflict in Gaza.

I assume you are aware of the huge increase in antisemitic incidents since Hamas attacked Israeli citizens, and Israel's subsequent efforts to eradicate Hamas and seek the return of the hostages.

See, e.g., https://www.adl.org/resources/press-release/us-antisemitic-incidents-skyrocketed-360- aftermath-attack-israel-according

The type of resolutions being considered by Fairfax only lead to more divisiveness and create more hostility towards your Jewish residents. They will not solve the problems that you were elected to solve.

We all regret civilian loss of life, and all want peace and the return of hostages. But passing these type of resolutions do not improve the town of Fairfax, and in fact will only harm it.

During a time of heightened tensions everywhere, I am imploring you as a town council member to please focus on building community in Fairfax instead. The town sits on an opportunity to  be supportive to ALL and make ALL feel safe and welcomed.

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Dear Fairfax Leaders,
I am a Jewish resident of San Francisco, and I will be thrilled if Fairfax calls for ceasefire in Gaza. Like many Jews and much of the world, I am devastated and outraged by the slaughter of innocents in Gaza. I have friends in Gaza and in Israel, and they are all suffering from this horror.

Calling for an immediate ceasefire, hostage release and humanitarian aid is not divisive or antisemitic, no matter what Israel lobby groups say. San Francisco and Oakland passed such resolutions, and they have brought people together. It’s ongoing massacre that is divisive.

Israel-identified organizations like Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) do not speak for all Jews..

They are exposing us to antisemitic attacks by those who accept Israel’s claim to represent all Jews.

As an American, I resent and grieve that my tax money funds the Israeli planes and bombs massacring women and children. How much tax money is Fairfax contributing to this war? We should use that money to help our own people, not to kill others.

Of course a resolution from Fairfax won’t stop the killing, but it puts one more weight on the scale for peace, and it would help bring the people together.

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Greetings,
I am a Jewish member of the community and i fully support the Fairfax Town Council adopting a ceasefire resolution between Israel and Hamas. I want to assure you that it is NOT antisemitic to criticize Israel. The state of Israel does not represent me, and in fact goes against every Jewish value I was raised with. When our electd officials don't hear us, it is our duty in a democracy to make our voices heard. A Ceasefire Resolution is is our voice.

I live on the corner of Oak Tree Lane and Sir Francis Drake. Heading out toward Woodacher I am the corner before you get to Manor.

1. Install road signs that say, "26 - 41 MPH equals a $35.00 fine."

2. Originally there was a stop sign on both sides of the street on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. at Oak Tree Lane. When they installed the traffic light in downtown Fairfax they removed the stop signs. Reinstall the stop signs with flashing LED stop signs.

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Dear Council Members:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Israel/Hamas conflict being addressed in the Town Council. I have been a Marin resident for 25 years and am proud of our politically active community.

Part of the soul of being an American, expressing our right to free speech.

My concern is that to date, the Israel/Hamas agenda items have resulted in hostile, extremely divisive events, leaving a visceral wake of negativity across the community including increased hate acts, defacement of the town, hostile outsiders being bussed into towns (many often paid to speak), and a wildly intensified breeding ground for antisemitism.

Additionally, while there are some Jews who are pushing for these talks, please know they do NOT represent the majority of us. They represent a a VERY small minority, feel free to check the statistics with the Jewish Community Relations Council and the ADL. 90% of Jews are Zionists. Meaning, we believe that Israel has the right to exist and is the homeland of the Jewish people.

During a time of heightened tensions everywhere, I am imploring you as a town council member to please focus on building community in Fairfax instead. The town sits on an opportunity to  be supportive to ALL and make ALL feel safe and welcomed.

Very much appreciate you for hearing me and respecting my concerns.

Today, Monday 4/29/24, would be the best so that it gives people a chance to adjust their schedule to attend the TC meeting or on Zoom.

Also, how about either moving the Wood Sign on the East side of the Parkade, across from the Northgate Gas?
This way it can be seen by everyone who drives on Drake.

Christine, please include this email in the Town Council Meeting packet.

Thank you,

Has it been “lost” or “ruined?
Please locate this Wood Sign and make sure it is put out the Monday BEFORE the Town Council Meeting and taken down the day AFTER the Town Council Meeting.

Residents who do not regularly drive on Bolinas Ave (those of us on the east side of SFD and towards White’s Hill) NEVER see this sign to know that there is a Town Council Meeting.

Would it be possible to place this sign at the end of the Parkade / SFD, across the street from the Northgate Gas?

THIS SEEMS TO BE THE BEST PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO BE
ABLE TO SEE IT, and THE SPRINKLERS (at Bolinas Park) WILL NOT CONTINUE TO HIT THE WOOD AND ERODE IT.

If not this sign, perhaps we need the same Town Council Meeting Sign wording, made of metal, placed here and at Bolinas Park. (I see many Farmer’s Market Signs placed
around town)

In place I think we should focus on America. Flying the American flag and banners and have a red white and blue crosswalk.

I would like to Adopt flying the American flag and painting the crosswalk red white and blue all year in our town of Fairfax.

Also, the affordable housing month proclamation should be removed. It inflames an already heated issue regarding rent stabilization. The affordable housing issue is a much bigger deal than placing it on the backs of hard working people of Fairfax.

Urgent Concern Regarding Israel/Hamas Conflict Resolution in Town Council Laliv Hadar <[email protected]>
Wed 5/1/2024 1:06 PM
To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> Dear Fairfax Town Council,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed resolution to address the Israel/Hamas conflict at the Fairfax Town Council. While I understand the importance of international issues, I believe that such matters can often have unintended consequences at the local level.

The history of Israel/Hamas agenda items being discussed in public forums has unfortunately led to hostile and divisive events within our community. These discussions have left a palpable wave of negativity, including an increase in hate acts, defacement of public property, and the unsettling presence of hostile individuals being brought into our town -- some of whom are reportedly compensated for their participation.

Furthermore, these discussions have created an environment that is conducive to antisemitic sentiments, which is deeply concerning. It's crucial to note that while there may be individuals of Jewish descent advocating for these talks or resolutions -- they do not represent the majority of our community. 90% of Jews are Zionists and believe in the right of Israel to exist and defend herself. Asking Israel to lay down its arms while the enemy goes on unencumbered is a nonstarter. Full stop.

In light of the heightened tensions globally, especially in the past week, I urge you as a respected member of our Town Council to prioritize initiatives that foster unity and inclusivity within Fairfax. Our town has a unique opportunity to demonstrate support for all residents and ensure that everyone feels safe and welcomed.

I respectfully request that the Town Council reconsider its focus and instead concentrate on initiatives that promote community-building, cultural understanding, and mutual respect among all residents.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely, Laliv Hadar

Dear Fairfax and San Anselmo Council members
While I’m against large scale, out of character building in Ross Valley towns, and adding more residents than town infrastructures can handle (roads, schools, grocery stores, parking, not to mention limited local job opportunities leading to more commute traffic), I do believe Ross Valley towns need to find ways to offer housing to people of diverse incomes.

I’d like to suggest Town sponsored workshops explaining various creative housing solutions to potential renters and buyers as well as current landlords and potential landlords.

A comprehensive workshop, which I think could be led by volunteers, would offer explanations of things such as; existing shared housing models, buying tenants in common, how to best navigate creative loan and financing options, navigating current laws and assessing the cost/benefit analysis of building JADUS and ADUS, and how existing real estate laws and local ordinances affect tenants and landlords.

I also propose towns offer free help to first time small scale landlords -especially the elderly, in renting out cottages and rooms - how to select tenants and do background checks so the landlord feels safe and supported in the process. This will help remove current hurdles to affordable infill rentals. (As a 30 year owner of two  Fairfax cottages, I know first hand that the current Fairfax just cause ordinance and vilification of landlords is inhibiting potential landlords from renting and therefore reducing, not expanding the number of available rentals.)
Lastly Towns could establish a volunteer commission to host meetings about shared housing models (Danish Co-Housing, for instance) and keep lists of people looking for such options, both to buy and to rent. The commission could work with local realtors to get promptly notified of properties suitable for shared living. There are properties in places like Oak Manor and Sleepy Hollow that could easily be renovated to accommodate two families and even three with an ADU, potentially mixed ownership and rental.

I grew up in Fairfax in a low income family and my parents often housed friends in need. Many of us long term Ross Valley people know the value of a diverse community and are proponents of low income rentals. We’d like our elected leaders not to be punitive to small scale landlords but to be proactive, realistic and creative about how affordable rentals could be offered- without overbuilding/overcrowding our unique and beloved towns with huge projects stating up front that 80% of the units will be ‘moderate or above moderate’ prices.

Thank you for considering this perspective on how Ross Valley Town leadership can support affordable housing options.

Councilmembers,
I am a Fairfax resident who as a member of NOAH Marin, received the proclamation recognizing United Against Hate Week in November and experienced hateful antisemitic and homophobic slurs.

I write today to oppose any discussion of the Israel/Hamas conflict by the Town Council.

Israel/Hamas agenda items have resulted in hostile, extremely divisive events, including increased hate acts, defacement of the town, and a wildly intensified breeding ground for antisemitism.

While some Jews are pushing for these talks, please know they do NOT represent the majority of us. At the Richmond town Council last night, I heard Zionism maligned, which denies the dream of a homeland for the Jewish people.

The struggle in Israel is a struggle for survival, not what people call genocide. Israel is waging a war against Hamas, a proxy of Iran to preserve western democracy.

Raising this topic stirs divisiveness in the community.

During a time of heightened tensions everywhere, I am imploring you as a town council member to please focus on building community in Fairfax instead. The town can focus on supporting ALL to make ALL feel safe and welcomed.

As an alternative, let’s look forward to recognizing United Against Hate Week which happens in September 2024, the week of 21st to 27th

First, thank you for recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month!!! Second, as an eleven plus year Fairfax resident, I am deeply concerned about those who are pressuring you to introduce a resolution regarding the Israel-Hamas War. Such a resolution will not bring peace abroad, but will continue to exacerbate community tensions and increase hate targeting the local Jewish community – as we have recently witnessed. The demonstrators are justifying the mass kidnappings and rapes perpetrated by Hamas.

Despite pressure from the same groups, The Board of Marin County Supervisors as well as the city councils of Petaluma, Sebastopol and Santa Rosa among others have recognized that spending hours of divisive debate on such resolutions would not be in the interests of their cities. As David Rabbitt, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, said, “The last thing this body wants to do is inflame tensions between communities and increase anxiety, stress, or threats of violence. We do not want to divide or polarize the community. This Board’s focus has always been on building bridges within our community and promoting empathy, understanding and support for all residents. That is our focus. I hope the Fairfax Town Council will stand by our existing resolutions condemning hatred and violence and calling for peace, rather than calling for a new resolution that while well-intentioned, has the potential to be divisive and counterproductive to bringing the community together.” It is our hope, that you will reject calls to agendize such a resolution and instead work to ensure that Fairfax remains a welcoming town for residents of all backgrounds. >> Subject: Question about a Town Council proposed/draft resolution on Middle East Events >>
>> Hi Heather, I understand that a member of the town council, Stephanie Hellman, is putting together a "ceasefire" resolution for vote on the May 1 Agenda. As a resident of San Anselmo (frequently in Fairfax), I hope that this issue could be set aside. The situation in the Middle East, including Gaza, is horrible and tragic but the peace and safety of our community is not well served by local governments taking up these extremely complicated and heated international matters. People like me, who are Jewish with a family in the area, feel unsafe when towns start taking sides on these matters, which inevitably result in favoring a "side" of the conflict. Would you be able to ask Stephanie to hold off for public safety reasons and because the matter is international policy? Thank you fo your consideration. I would be happy to talk more about this. Best, Regina

SUBJECT: Please vote against agendizing Israel/Hamas conflict Dear Council Members,
I am writing to strongly oppose the Israel/Hamas conflict being addressed in the Town Council.

Regardless of intent, Israel/Hamas agenda items have resulted in hostile, extremely divisive events, leaving a visceral wake of negativity across the community including increased hate acts, defacement of the town, hostile players being bussed into towns (many often paid to speak), and a wildly intensified breeding ground for antisemitism. Also, while there are some Jews who are pushing for these talks, please know they do NOT represent the majority of us.

During a time of heightened tensions everywhere, I am imploring you as a town council member to please focus on building community in Fairfax instead. The town sits on an opportunity to be supportive to ALL and make ALL feel safe and welcomed.

Sincerely,
Special recognitions

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> We have several,Palestinian neighbors. In all fairness especially as to not show favoritism could you not have a Palestinian heritage month. I find it very hypocritical to have Jewish heritage month in the present circumstance of the ongoing war. Or are you not able to see how this could be offensive to some who also are our neighbors ?
I’d like to know why this action is being taken
Thank you

To:Fairfax Town Council <[email protected]> I have a money saving idea and you won’t need to strip. They have narrow weather proof rainbow strips in their downtown cross walks. Please take a field trip to Sausalito and check out the crosswalks in front of poggio. These are very spiffy looking.

And are permanent.

And colorful I think they also have traction and are non slip. Which is also good They are low maintenance and money saving
Susanne Chaney.

Thank you
