To Fairfax Town Council Members,
I am writing to you as a resident of Marin County, and a concerned MuslimAmerican community member. Please vote YES on the Peace Proclamation and support a Ceasefire Now. As someone who has lived in Marin my entire life, I am so pleased to hear that Fairfax City Council is the first city in all of Marin County to acknowledge the humanity of Palestinians while they continue to be indiscriminately carpet-bombed and killed in the Gaza strip.
Islamophobia is on the rise within our country, posing a significant threat to the well-being and safety of our diverse communities and all Americans. As a MuslimAmerican, I am concerned about living in a County that prides itself in progressive values but consciously ignores the blatant violations of international law the Israeli military is committing while Palestinians in Gaza suffer catastrophic daily loss.
The Gaza genocide is an urgent humanitarian disaster that requires immediate international attention. After enduring a 16-year economic blockade imposed by the Israeli government and the evasion of Int, the people of Gaza now face the open threat of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Since October 7, more than 36,000 people have been killed including more than 15,000 children. Per the United Nations, the situation unfolding in Gaza is an “appalling and unprecedented humanitarian disaster” with 90% of the population displaced, 60% of the infrastructure destroyed and only 25% of hospitals functioning with very little supplies. Gaza’s 2.3 million population is on the brink of starvation.
How many more children and innocent people have to die before our government acts?
As U.S. citizens and Marin County residents, our tax contributions fund this atrocity, imparting upon us a direct responsibility to implore our elected officials to refrain from financing Israel’s continuing pursuits of genocide, apartheid, and occupation.
A ceasefire resolution urges the United States to reassert its leadership role as a negotiator, addressing the root causes of violence, and ending Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies. As global citizens, it remains our moral duty to consistently advocate for peace and justice wherever they are needed in the world.
This letter is not asking you to ignore the suffering of Israelis and it in no way condones violence perpetrated on civilians. I do, however, implore you to acknowledge the loss of lives and recognize humanity on both sides as all human life is precious.
Fairfax City Council, I wholeheartedly support any and every effort put into a ceasefire resolution. Vote yes. Be on the right side of history.
Thank you,
Maria Patel

Re: “Proclamation of Peace” on the Town Council’s June 5, 2024 meeting agenda Dear Town Council members,
This office serves as counsel to individual members of the community, and on their behalf, reviewed the “Proclamation of Peace” currently before the Town Council. I write to you in your capacity as Town Council members.
In our opinion, there are legal risks to Fairfax should the Town adopt the Proclamation of Peace. These risks arise from both the substance of the proclamation and its form.
There is time and opportunity for the Town to avoid the consequences of adopting the proclamation. The Town should reject it.
First and foremost, the proclamation exacerbates divisions in the town, alienating Jewish and pro-Israel residents at best, and promoting their harassment and violence against them at worst. For instance, it uses the term “Palestine,” a term that is undefined and that is used by Jihadists, Hamas, and other entities and nations intent on annihilation of the State of Israel. It calls for entry of “humanitarian assistance into Gaza” as if that is the responsibility of anyone other than Hamas, the government of Gaza that is supported by the vast majority of those who live in Gaza. It omits calling for humanitarian assistance into Israel, which has been, and continues to be attacked by Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran, as well as from terrorists entering from Jordan and Judea and Samaria. The proclamation does not call for the elimination of Hamas, a horrible U.S.-designated terrorist organization. The proclamation fails to call on all countries, including Iran, and those who call themselves Palestinians (whether in Gaza or elsewhere), to end their stated goal of eliminating the State of Israel and killing Jewish people. The proclamation fails to call for the destruction of the terror infrastructure in
Gaza. The proclamation fails to call for the de-funding of UNWRA. While purporting to promote peace, the proclamation promotes antisemitism, Judeophobia, racism, discrimination, hatred, and violence against Jewish and Israeli persons.
The purpose of the proclamation, a focus on Israel, is itself discriminatory and antisemitic. Moreover, without denouncing Hamas, the Hamas charter and the objectives of those who are intent on the destruction of Israel, your proclamation is antisemitic, Judeophobic, and unlawfully discriminatory. The proclamation is an attempt to appease those whose agenda is the annihilation of the State of Israel, and the persecution and killing of Jewish persons everywhere.
Those who have pressured the Town of Fairfax into creating and considering the proclamation will not stop if you adopt it. Instead, you will have created precedent for the loud and hateful to pressure you into additional hateful, discriminatory, antisemitic, and unlawful legislation, be it divestment, indoctrination of children, or anything else.
The Town will demonstrate that it is willing to become a tool for anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and Judeophobic hate mongers.
Fairfax Town Code Section 2.08.090 (B) does not shield the Town, or you individually, from becoming defendants in a lawsuit, if the proclamation is adopted. Town codes do not supersede state or federal law. Pursuant to the dormant foreign affairs doctrine, levels of government below the federal government, including cities, have no authority to adopt attitudes about foreign affairs. On foreign affairs our country speaks with one voice, through our federal government, and not through individual localities. Your proclamation is precisely the type of policy, attitude, or statement that a town or city is precluded from making.
Furthermore, all State governments within our United States of America are obligated by law to respect the sovereignty of other nations. Accordingly, Fairfax would be overreaching its authority with the proclamation, which “calls” for an “end to violent conflict” by the government or State of Israel (or any other government). You have no jurisdiction to tell the State of Israel what it should do.
The conflict between Hamas (and those who act in the interests of Hamas and its supporters) and the other powers who are intent on the destruction of the State of Israel is fundamentally a religious conflict. The State of Israel, with Jewish people living in their own ancestral Land of Israel and governing themselves, is not only based on the thousands of years of Jewish presence in that land, but also in Judaism. It is a basic tenet of Judaism. Islamic theology contradicts that. In calling any part of the Land of Israel “Palestine,” your proclamation promotes Islamic theology and discriminates against Judaism. This is unconstitutional, unlawful, and immoral.
The environment is primed for conflict. The proclamation adds a spark. In a town in which the public is comprised of those who identify with Israel and those who identify with Gaza, Palestinians, or Hamas, the proclamation will exacerbate differences rather than encouraging empathy, tolerance, or understanding.
Very truly yours,
Ester Adut

Please do Not introduce this resolution. Please acknowledge that this proclamation has many layers that only leads to Divide a Community.
Residents have been pointing out that this one statement, one phrase, can communicate different meanings. While you believe your statement is a call for peace, we have seen the opposite outcome, and have seen the result of divide. If you have not had the chance, please refer to what took place during Palo Alto, Berkeley, and other city council meetings. Please refer to what took place during the Richmond City Council and the relaying of misinformation...
If it is peaceful discussion you're wanting, than perhaps plan an evening for a Balanced, educational discussion, a sharing of perspectives....Not a move to open the mic to hate and divide.
Thank you.

I am sharing this quote from a therapist friend:
"We just agree that there is profound suffering in all cases and care about all who suffer." Instagram page where Joe McGarry, Vocal advocate for a cease-fire resolution, disrupts Jared Huffman and is escorted out by the police
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C7BM-L0LXT6/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== This quote from the Instagram account, states their intention:
We are coming for you! From San Rafael to San Anselmo
and from Sausalito to Novato...
we will be in your chambers and we will not rest
until you follow the lead of Fairfax.
As for the Marin County Board of Supervisors, we are still watching and have some special plans for you and your bloodstained hands!
Get ready!!!
You’ve heard that addressing this issue fans the flames of divisiveness and choosing to put this proclamation forward will serve as a catalyst throughout Marin.
If you vote to address the proclamation and/or pass it, then you are intentionally creating more pain and suffering.

Dear Fairfax City Council,
I’m writing to you to urge you to pass the Israeli-Palestinian peace proclamation this Wednesday.
Over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since October, the majority of whom are women and children. According to the UN, more children were killed in four months of war in Gaza than in four years of war around the world. Hundreds more are dying every day. For months, people of conscience across the world have protested day-in and day-out against Israel’s military actions.
Palestinians in Fairfax have family and friends in Gaza. They are experiencing immeasurable trauma and need their city to speak up for them. The call for peace has been a deeply local effort by residents in Fairfax.
A majority of Americans disapprove of Israel's actions in Gaza, and a majority of Israelis support a hostage deal over a Rafah invasion. The majority support peace. Please pass the peace proclamation and echo the majority of the world in calling for a ceasefire and lasting peace.
Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Fairfax City Council,
Dear Fairfax City Council,
I am writing in admiration of your leadership and attempt to pass the Israeli-Palestinian peace proclamation this Wednesday.
I understand the pushback you must be getting from certain members of the community. It takes both conviction and courage to do what is right, especially when it isn’t popular.
However, the good news is that doing the right thing in this case is actually very popular, just not amongst a small group of people with very loud voices who are wired for oppression. It is important that we all stand together against these voices. They aren’t as scary as they sound when we all stand up to them together.
We have all been watching the live stream of the genocide in Palestine. Just today I was watching a video showing that Palestine now has the highest concentration of people, especially children missing limbs. On average, 10 children per day lose at least one limb.
Almost 20,000 children have been orphaned. And these are all presumably the lucky ones. The horrors are beyond imagination, beyond comprehension.
Please have courage to go forward with this peace proclamation. Nothing in this world is better than peace for all humans.
Thank you again for your leadership and empathy.
Dina Hassanein

To Fairfax Town Council Members,
I am writing to you as a resident of Marin County, and a concerned Muslim-American community member.
Please vote YES on the Peace Proclamation and
support a Ceasefire Now. As someone who has lived in
Marin my entire life, I am so pleased to hear that Fairfax City Council is the first city in all of Marin County to acknowledge the humanity of Palestinians while they
continue to be indiscriminately carpet-bombed and killed in the Gaza strip.
Islamophobia is on the rise within our country, posing a significant threat to the well-being and safety of our
diverse communities and all Americans. As a MuslimAmerican, I am concerned about living in a County that prides itself in progressive values but consciously
ignores the blatant violations of international law the Israeli military is committing while Palestinians in Gaza suffer catastrophic daily loss.
The Gaza genocide is an urgent humanitarian disaster
that requires immediate international attention. After
enduring a 16-year economic blockade imposed by the
Israeli government and the evasion of Int, the people of Gaza now face the open threat of ethnic cleansing and
genocide.
Since October 7, more than 36,000 people have been
killed including more than 15,000 children. Per the
United Nations, the situation unfolding in Gaza is an
“appalling and unprecedented humanitarian disaster”
with 90% of the population displaced, 60% of the
infrastructure destroyed and only 25% of hospitals
functioning with very little supplies. Gaza’s 2.3 million population is on the brink of starvation.
How many more children and innocent people have to
die before our government acts?
As U.S. citizens and Marin County residents, our tax
contributions fund this atrocity, imparting upon us a direct responsibility to implore our elected officials to refrain from financing Israel’s continuing pursuits of genocide, apartheid, and occupation.
A ceasefire resolution urges the United States to
reassert its leadership role as a negotiator, addressing the root causes of violence, and ending Israel’s
occupation and apartheid policies. As global citizens, it remains our moral duty to consistently advocate for
peace and justice wherever they are needed in the
world.
This letter is not asking you to ignore the suffering of Israelis and it in no way condones violence perpetrated on civilians. I do, however, implore you to acknowledge the loss of lives and recognize humanity on both sides as all human life is precious.
Fairfax City Council, I wholeheartedly support any and
every effort put into a ceasefire resolution. Vote yes. Be on the right side of history.
Thank you,
Sumaira Olla

Hi,
My name is Rabbi Moshe and I serve Jewish individuals in the town of Fairfax.
Thank you for listening to our community; I can tell that you put much thought into the wording.
I have seen that the proclamation has been reported in the Media and it is sure to attract many who, unfortunately, like using the suffering of Palestinians to justify their hatred of Jews. It is sure to include demonizing rhetoric and even justification of the targeting of incidents and Hamas's brutal rape, torture, and murder (as one speaker did in last meeting).
Additionally, this will encourage such people to put more effort to continue their behavior in other towns across Marin.
I understand that for many of you, you are trying to just make the world better but please understand that for the Jewish community, this is not theory: this is real. Your actions have consequences.
I therefore urge you to not pass this resolution.
Moreover, the proclamation makes no mention of the gleeful targeting and brutal rape, torture, murder, and mutilation of innocents on October 7th. It merely speaks about “those who lost their lives” as if they just died from collateral damage of a war.
Peace and dialogue cannot be obtained through desecrating the memory of victims of rape, torture, and murder by hiding the gruesome crimes committed against them. This can also be seen as a dog whistle for those who downplay the horrors.
Item number 5 is also not accurate. Israel allows unlimited aid into Gaza. It is actually Hamas who is stealing the aid for themselves for profit. That outright lie can be seen as legitimizing demonizing rhetoric against supporters of Israel (as we’ve seen many who call them pigs, child murderers, and other terms which could only be found in the history books on blood libels).
I urge you to vote no to this. It will not bring about peace no matter how it’s worded. It will only remove the peace from our town.
If you truly want peace, heed the proverb (18:21) “Death and life are in the hand of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its produce.” And the teaching of Zachariah:
(8:16) “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth each one with his neighbor; truth, and judgment of peace you shall judge in your cities.” Focus on truth and peace in our town!
With prayers for real and everlasting peace,
Rabbi Moshe
