DISCUSSION
The attached summary report covers the April to June programs:
• Quarterly Financial (reviewed by Michael Vivrette)
• Revenue Detail and additional summary
The Recreation and Community Services Department serves the Fairfax population and beyond and provides all age groups affordable, fun programs, events, and opportunities to use Town facilities for gatherings and cultural events.
During Spring quarter, Fairfax Recreation worked on promotional efforts to support the variety of classes, partnerships and camps happening for the town, including new pilot offerings such as, College Essay Writing for Teens and Soccer Camp, among others. In April, we successfully kicked off a partnership with the Wayfinder Bookshop to host a book talk in the Women’s Club. With attendance numbers at around 50, this partnership has the dual potential to help bring people into town to support local businesses and offer high quality literary programming to our community. Also, during April, we welcomed a new PARC member, helped support Climate Action Committee’s Earth Day Celebration with camp leaders promoting summer camps and providing art projects.
May brought more activities, events and meetings, including the 2nd annual Spring Artisan Craft Pop Up, spread headed by our Artist in Residence, Sharon Virtue. We partnered with Archie Williams High School on May 11th and held a successful teen musical festival night at the Pavilion with around 200 attendees.
The Disaster Council meeting was on May 21 at the Women’s Club. Through PARC, we conducted outreach to White Hill Middle School to host “Mayor of the Day” essay contest that will take place in September. The award recipient will serve as Mayor at October Town Council meeting. At the May 8th budget hearing meeting, we were directed by the Town Council to conduct a feasibility study for a dog park per citizen petition request. Following that directive, we researched other Marin dog parks, scoped out potential locations in Fairfax and worked with Public Works Director, Loren Umbertis, to explore site visits in Peri Park. Anne met with local recreation managers to learn more about the various operational structures to help support better pathways in efficiency for Fairfax’s recreation department. Additionally, she started a six-month Management Analyst Boot Camp offered through Regional Government Services 2 as part of her professional development, which among many objectives helps participants learn how to solve agency problems.
Throughout the month of June, staff worked on preparing for the upcoming summer camp season, including tee shirt design, purchase orders for supplies and finalizing contracts. We arranged for the placement of pride lamp post flag banners to be hung in observation of Pride Month. And a PARC sponsored event on behalf of the Climate Action Committee was held at the Women’s Club on June 28th showcasing a film called, “The Scale of Hope”. The mosaic project in the Parkade funded by the David MacDonald estate was executed by AIR Sharon Virtue and around 25 volunteers and finalized at the end of the month. It is a beautiful display of art in action and the power art has in bringing the community together.
Department staff worked together on the 2024-25 budget, helped support the Fairfax Festival committee, met with our Artist in Residence Collaborative to support, and plan spring and summer activities including music concerts, community mural project, in addition to preparing for Annual Art Walk.
