AGENDA ITEM #13
TOWN OF FAIRFAX PROCLAMATION
Recognizing October as National Pedestrian Safety Month
WHEREAS, walking is a healthy, sustainable mode of transportation that supports community well-being and reduces environmental impact; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Fairfax is committed to safe, accessible streets that encourage residents and visitors of all ages and abilities to walk, aligning with its General Plan’s focus on maintaining a pedestrian-friendly environment; and
WHEREAS, a safe and welcoming environment for walking improves public health, fosters vibrant neighborhoods, and supports local businesses by increasing foot traffic and economic activity; and
WHEREAS, pedestrian safety is a critical concern, with national data showing that in 2019, a pedestrian was killed every 85 minutes in a traffic crash; and WHEREAS, the Town acknowledges that certain communities, including older adults and those in underserved areas, are disproportionately represented in pedestrian crashes, highlighting the need for equitable safety measures; and
WHEREAS, drivers must remain vigilant to ensure pedestrian safety at crosswalks and intersections, whether marked or unmarked, and maintain safe speeds as even small increases in speed can significantly elevate the risk of severe injuries and fatalities; and WHEREAS, during this time of heightened awareness of public health and climate change, walking is an ideal way for residents to stay active, connect with neighbors, and reduce their carbon footprint; and
WHEREAS, the Town recognizes the efforts of community organizations and advocates promoting pedestrian safety and the benefits of walking as a mode of transportation and recreation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY PROCLAIMED by the Town Council of Fairfax that the Town of Fairfax recognizes October 2024 in Fairfax as “Walktober” and Pedestrian Safety Month, and urge all community members to embrace the benefits of walking and work together to promote a safer and more walkable environment for everyone.
Signed this 16th day of October 2024
