AGENDA ITEM #8.j
Proclamation of the Town of Fairfax

SCENT SENSITIVITY
WHEREAS, scent sensitivity is a medical condition affecting many individuals in our community, whereby exposure to fragrances and scented products—such as perfumes, air fresheners, laundry detergents, and cleaning supplies—can trigger a range of adverse health effects; and WHEREAS, those living with scent sensitivity may experience debilitating symptoms including migraines, respiratory distress, sinus congestion, eye and throat irritation, cognitive challenges, nausea, and dizziness, which significantly impact their daily well-being and quality of life; and WHEREAS, the Town of Fairfax recognizes the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where all residents can feel safe and welcome, including those whose health is compromised by exposure to fragrances in public spaces; and
WHEREAS, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), which oversees air quality in our region, provides a means for reporting scent-related concerns at 1-800-334-ODOR (6367), thereby supporting efforts to address and mitigate exposure risks; and WHEREAS, many widely available consumer products contain fragrances—sometimes unlisted or masked by the term “unscented”—highlighting the importance of choosing genuinely “fragrancefree” alternatives to reduce harm to those affected; and WHEREAS, the Town of Fairfax is committed to raising awareness, promoting compassion, and encouraging both residents and businesses to consider scent-free practices as a gesture of community care and accessibility;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Town Council of the Town of Fairfax does hereby encourage community members to consider opting for fragrance-free products, supporting greater availability of such items, and advocating for a healthier, more inclusive environment for all.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town of Fairfax, California, to be affixed this 5th day of November 2025. ______________________________________
Lisel Blash, Mayor of Fairfax
