RECOMMENDATION
Select one councilmember to serve as Mayor and one to serve as Vice Mayor for the next 12 months.
DISCUSSION
Each year at the first Town Council meeting in December, the Fairfax Town Council rotates the ceremonial positions of Mayor and Vice Mayor, selecting from among its members the new Mayor and Vice Mayor for the next 12 months.
The Council has complete discretion in selecting which of its members will fill these two positions.
Typically, for the Mayor position, the current Vice Mayor is selected. The current Vice Mayor of Fairfax is Vice Mayor Hellman.
The Vice Mayor position is generally filled by the councilmember for whom the greatest amount of time has passed since she or he last served as Mayor, or by the newest Councilmember who has served for at least one year. The objective is to provide an opportunity for all council members to serve as Mayor and/or Vice Mayor during their term of office.
Following Town Council deliberations and a majority vote for the Mayor and Vice Mayor seats, the new Mayor and Vice Mayor are seated immediately following their selection.
