FAIRFAX TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

STAFF REPORT
AGENDA ITEM #2
MEETING DATE January 12, 2026
PREPARED FOR Mayor and Town Council
PREPARED BY Christine Foster, Assistant to the Town Manager/Deputy Town Clerk SUBJECT Establish a Town Council Subcommittee to Collaborate with the Fairfax Open Space Committee on Name Recommendations for the Wall Property

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Town Council:

1. Discuss establishing a subcommittee of two Councilmembers to work with the Fairfax Open Space Committee (FOSC) and the community to review naming options for the Wall Property; and

2. Appoint two Councilmembers to serve on the subcommittee.

BACKGROUND
The Town of Fairfax acquired the Wall Property in 2024, preserving it as permanent public open space with funding support from Measure A, the California Coastal Conservancy, and community donors.

Following the acquisition, the Fairfax Open Space Committee (FOSC) initiated a community-based process to gather public input on potential names for the property and its features.

Public input was collected during several community events throughout 2025, including the Fairfax Festival/Ecofest, the Town Picnic, and through online outreach. The process generated numerous suggestions from residents, and an ad hoc committee of FOSC reviewed the submissions for further consideration.

DISCUSSION
To support a transparent and collaborative process, staff recommends that the Town Council appoint a subcommittee of two Councilmembers to work directly with FOSC and the community to further evaluate naming options. The subcommittee would serve in an advisory and liaison role and help guide the development of a final set of naming recommendations for the full Council’s future consideration.

Establishing a subcommittee at this stage will allow for:
• Continued public engagement and transparency;
• Coordination with FOSC in refining and contextualizing naming suggestions; • Consideration of any procedural, historical, or cultural factors that may apply to the naming process.

Staff recommends that the Council appoint two members at this meeting. 2 COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The Fairfax Open Space Committee conducted public outreach throughout 2025 to gather naming suggestions. The outreach included in-person engagement at community events and online opportunities for residents to participate.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact associated with the formation of a subcommittee.
