FAIRFAX TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

STAFF REPORT

MEETING DATE June 3, 2026
PREPARED FOR Mayor and Town Council
PREPARED BY Kristin Arnold, P.E. Director of Public Works SUBJECT Adopt a Resolution Declaring the 1994 Ford F-Series Dump Truck as Surplus and Authorizing Its Disposal by Public Auction

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution declaring the 1994 Ford F-Series dump truck as surplus and authorizing its disposal by public auction.

BACKGROUND
The Department of Public Works has an outdated 1994 Ford F-Series dump truck. This vehicle was previously used for significant landslide cleanups, especially during large winter storms. The Town also owns two other dump trucks that are utilized more frequently throughout the year.

DISCUSSION
The 1994 Ford F-Series dump truck does not meet current California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements for regular operation and is therefore not suitable for continued service. While the vehicle could potentially qualify for low-use under CARB, it has seen minimal use in recent years. Given that the Public Works Department maintains two additional dump trucks, retaining this vehicle is not operationally necessary. The truck occupies valuable storage space and would require ongoing maintenance to remain in operable condition. Declaring this vehicle as surplus will allow the Town to recover some value through auction and free up space and reduce maintenance liability. Staff does not recommend purchasing a replacement dump truck, as two other dump trucks are sufficient to meet operational needs.

FISCAL IMPACT
The proceeds from the public auction will go to the Town’s General Fund. Exact proceeds are uncertain due to the vehicle’s age.
