AGENDA ITEM #8.o
Proclamation in Recognition of
Ageism Awareness Day
WHEREAS, ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination directed toward others or oneself because of age. It is one of the most widespread and socially accepted forms of bias, and it affects people of every age; and
WHEREAS, ageism harms health and well-being. A 2020 poll found that 82 percent of adults ages 50 to 80 experience ageism daily, and older people with more positive views of their own aging live, on average, 7.5 years longer than those with negative views; and WHEREAS, children learn age stereotypes as early as age three, and those stereotypes are reinforced over a lifetime. This makes intergenerational connection and realistic portrayals of aging important for every generation; and
WHEREAS, older adults are essential members of the Fairfax community. They serve as neighbors, volunteers, caregivers, workers, business owners, artists, and civic leaders, and they make up a significant and growing share of our town's residents; and WHEREAS, in 2015 the Town of Fairfax joined the World Health Organization's Global Network of AgeFriendly Cities and Communities. Through Age-Friendly Fairfax, the Town continues to offer free classes, community forums, intergenerational programs, and celebrations honoring older residents; and
WHEREAS, the American Society on Aging observes Ageism Awareness Day each October 9 to draw attention to the impact of ageism and to promote age-inclusive communities where everyone can thrive;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that THE Town Council of the Town of Fairfax hereby proclaims October 9, 2026 as AGEISM AWARENESS DAY in the Town of Fairfax. I encourage all residents, businesses, and organizations to examine their own assumptions about aging, to speak up against age-based stereotypes and discrimination, and to work together across generations to build a community where people of every age are valued, respected, and included.
Signed on this 7th day of October 2026

Mayor of Fairfax
