Rolling Hills Neighbors,
We would like to inform you of ongoing discussions between the City of Fairfield and some residents regarding the future of the peafowl that live among us in the neighborhood. It is important to remember we all have a voice in whatever outcome is agreed upon and awareness of the various options currently being discussed with city officials. Once a final determination is made and approved, it may be difficult to revert or renegotiate any official changes that are implemented. Many residents were not made aware of the peafowl meeting or discussions with the City of Fairfield.
Below are some talking points and highlights discussed during the Fairfield City Council meeting that occurred on July 18th of this year:
• Officials suggested the optimal peafowl population size of 20-25 birds, and they estimated that the current population is at 100-120 birds. • Comments from residents who attended the meeting included suggestions to remove the peafowl due to noise, property damage, and feeding concerns. • Suggestions made to resolve these issues included entrapping the peafowl permanently in Dunnell Park and removing the peafowl altogether.
• After residents' comments concluded, city council members suggested that reducing the peafowl population to the proposed target size of 20-25 peafowl should be done promptly.
• Some city council members argued that constructing an aviary, a tall metal wire fence surrounding Dunnell Park, was a long-term solution.
We want to stress that your voice matters greatly to all of us, and we value your opinions and ideas. We extend an open invitation to join us at the upcoming peafowl board meeting, where we can explore these matters further and work together to find solutions so the peafowl remains part of our community. We are currently in the process of scheduling a meeting and if you are interested in attending, please contact us at the email address below so we can inform you of the meeting date and time.
Your participation is vital in shaping a harmonious community, and we look forward to hearing from you and collectively investigating decisions that satisfy everyone. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please know that you are also welcome to write a letter or email the peafowl committee, expressing your thoughts and ideas. Together, we can foster a stronger, more vibrant neighborhood for all to enjoy.
