To the Mayor and City Council‐members

There are many of us who believe that you received a very biased view of how residents of Rolling Hills feel about the peafowl. We do not believe that our opinions and desires have been given the same weight as those who consider peafowl to be only noisy, messy and destrucƟve.

The peafowl were here before the houses so the residents knew they were moving into an area that included them. If, for instance, someone moves into an area with bears there is an assumpƟon there may be noise and destrucƟon from the bears. The residents must make allowances. As for destrucƟveness, there have been very few instances of peacock destrucƟon. Things happen which is why you have insurance.

You received an email from the SPCA of LA staƟng very good reasons for leaving the peacocks alone and finding more humane ways of dealing with them. I hope that you will give this leƩer and the informaƟon provided in it at least the same weight you gave the residents who want to reduce or eliminate them. Whether the situaƟon has goƩen out of hand is a maƩer of opinion. One we do not share. We want the peacocks free to roam our neighborhood, not confined to the former sanctuary. I realize that may be shocking, but it is a valid posiƟon if you listen to more of the residents than have tesƟfied so far.

We do not think it should be taken for granted that trapping and relocaƟng is OK, that the birds should be confined to a small area, or that the people who don’t like them have more power than those who do.

My husband and I will both be asking to speak at tonight’s meeƟng.
