STATEMENT OF ISSUE
The Fairfield Police Department has applied for and obtained tentative approval for a Cannabis Tax Fund Grant from the California Highway Patrol. The grant , worth $226,503.72, will fund impaired driving enforcement operations, impaired driving safety presentations, and impaired driving training for our officers.
DISCUSSION
The Fairfield Police Department continuously focuses staffing and financial resources on traffic safety. This is being done to improve the quality of life for our residents and visitors utilizing our local highways. The goal of the Police Department’s Traffic Unit is to reduce injury and fatality- causing collisions on our roadways. Several of the injuries and fatal collisions are caused by impaired driving. The Traffic Unit plans to reduce these collisions by dedicating enforcement resources to focus on proactively removing impaired drivers from the roadway.
This grant allows the Police Department to assign officers on an ove rtime basis and task them with specifically focusing on impaired driving enforcement. These enforcement operations will
focus on times and locations when these collisions are known to occur. Additionally, funding from the grant will also provide valuable impaired driving training to our officers.
In 2023, the Fairfield Police Department investigated 116 DUI-related traffic collisions. 43 of those traffic collisions resulted in an injury and one fatality. In 2024, the Fairfield Police Department investigated 132 DUI-related traffic collisions. Of those traffic collisions, 36 resulted in some type of injury, and one resulted in a fatality.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
With acceptance of the grant, the police department will receive $226,503.72. The grant funding will cover overtime costs for police department personnel participating in the grant-related activities. A special programs fund will be used for the grant (Fund 155, Division, and Responsibility code 50199).
