I am writing in response to the rezoning of the SureStay Hotel.
To convert the SureStay hotel to housing for unhoused individuals with behavioral and mental health issues, registered sex offenders would be a horrible and unsafe decision for the city. It does mention veterans, but only allows for about 10 units.
The purpose of the City Council is to listen to its constituents and decide what is the best for most of the citizens of the city and this is definitely not going to benefit us.
The cost of this project alone is misleading. Sure, we get $22 million from Homekey + to renovate the property. I noticed from the Agenda Report dated February 4, 2025, from the City Manager that the city is contributing $1 million from the Local Housing Trust Fund and $535,541 from Prohousing Incentive Program from the State. What this Agenda does not address is who pays the ongoing cost to maintain this facility.
The City Council must not see the same unhoused people with mental issues that I do on the streets. This project includes “outdoor amenities such as a pool, dog run, smoking
2 area and community garden.” The people I see require rehabilitation and professional help, not a pool. Don’t get me started on registered sex offenders. They made a conscious decision to harm another person, they should be locked up for life, not sit in a free room and by the pool.
The location of this facility is another problem. The businesses and residences in this area would definitely not benefit from this, in fact they would be hurt.
I hope your minds aren’t already made (as some have suggested) and you decide to do what is best for the majority of the voters and taxpayers.
Thank you for listening.
