A. General
Coordinate with Underground Services Alert (USA) for utility locates and potholing. Protect existing utilities; repair damages at Contractor’s expense. Obtain permits 20 days in advance; batch applications allowed for up to 10 sites. A mandatory pre-construction meeting shall be held with City staff and utility agencies to review scope, identify conflicts, and confirm scheduling for both traffic and broadband networks, including traffic and security camera installations and use of existing conduits. The Contractor shall provide a construction schedule and confirm material lead times for Duraline microduct, CommScope microfiber, NOVUX products, Propel panels, camera systems, and regular OSP cables. No installation may proceed until all materials are onsite. Work shall be coordinated with utility owners to avoid conflicts with existing facilities.

B. Trenching and Backfill
Shall comply to the most recent version of the City of Fairfield Standard Specifications.

C. Conduit and Cable Placement
Install conduits in common trenches with other utilities where feasible. Total bends ≤270° between pull boxes. For fiber: Use fusion splicing per splice sheet; seal ends with duct seal. Cables must be pulled with manufacturer-approved methods, no stabbing or swinging. Install in straight paths, entering cabinets frontally. For MaxCell or FuturePath, follow manufacturer guidelines for tensioning (every 10 ft binding) and lubricants to prevent waving or spiraling. In areas where existing and congested traffic conduits are utilized, space constraints may dictate the use of regular OSP cables (G.657.A1 or G.657.A2) instead of CommScope microfiber to prevent potential damage to microfiber cables. Prior to installation, the Contractor shall inspect existing conduits for suitability, ensuring they are free of obstructions and compatible with OSP cable installation.

Existing conduits shall be cleaned and mandrel tested prior to OSP cable installation. OSP cables shall be installed without exceeding the manufacturer’s maximum pulling tension, with pull forces documented and submitted to the Engineer. Where OSP cables are used, the Contractor shall ensure compatibility with LC/UPC connectors for traffic networks and SC/APC connectors for broadband networks at termination points.

D. Microduct and Conduit Installation for Traffic and Broadband Networks  All new microducts shall be Duraline microduct, with a minimum diameter suitable for CommScope microfiber (12-24 count, G.657.A1 or G.657.A2) to support traffic and security camera connectivity, and up to 16 mm for broadband networks (up to 864 count fibers) based on service delivery requirements. Where existing and congested conduits are used, regular OSP cables (G.657.A1 or G.657.A2) may be installed as per subsection C. Microducts and conduits shall be installed to a depth of 42” below finished grade for road crossings, 24” below finished grade for landscaped areas, and 12” below finished grade for sidewalks.

Microducts and conduits shall be installed via directional bore unless otherwise specified or approved and shall contain a 1,200-lb detectable pull tape with footage markers and a #8 AWG copper trace wire.
