Dear Mayor Warren and Council Members,
Please accept my letter and supporting document as an indication of my sincere interest in the position as City Clerk for Fontana. We all share a commitment to providing for our working families, protecting the political process, and promoting inclusion and equity in all policy areas for all residents of this great city.
My drive to enter politics comes from seeking to empower those who fall through the cracks of policy. To advocate for disadvantaged communities by providing access to services for those who are not represented in the Inland Empire. I grew up in the Inland Empire and Fontana is where my family and friends still reside. I am a proud daughter of immigrants and a first generation college graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. This degree has prepared me well by developing my working knowledge of underlying societal inequalities, valuable insights into social factors that influence societal behaviors, and the ability to apply various lenses to pressing issues. Prior to transferring to UCLA, I began my college education locally at CSU San Bernardino. It was the more affordable option, being a short commute from home and work that I was able to continue to support my family and pay for my education. The struggles I've dealt with in attaining higher education is what bolsters me to fight to increase access and assistance to higher education for low and middle income families.
In addition to my coursework, I have previous experience working as a Legislative Infer in the office of Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo through the UC Center Sacramento program. During my internship, I produced over 40 press releases and sets of talking points for events, constituents and stakeholders. The office offered to extend the internship once the program ended. I had taken on more legislative duties as well as fulfilled the role of an office/administrative assistant. I am the first to greet guests of the office, arrange meetings and manage incoming mail. I am familiar with answering, handling and logging constituent calls and letters. I prepared vote recommendations for the Assembly Health Committee hearings and the Assembly Floor. I conducted research on the member's legislative priorities, attended staffer U&E meetings, staffed her for press conferences, drafted detailed correspondence concerning committee briefings and legislation. I assisted the legislative aides with the Labor Committee and organized the Select Committee on Uplifting Girls and Women of Color, of which Assemblymember Carrillo sits as Chair.
I then worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee as a committee assistant. I was in charge of all administrative tasks, directly corresponding with constituents and other guests, organizing and overseeing all background sheets for all bills through the committee and handling several deadlines from letters, to editing bill analyses, to running the Senate Judiciary hearings every week. I work promptly with the committee Counsel with research, reading, editing and with ensuring that all matters are completed promptly and with no errors. I can anticipate the needs of consultants, constituents and Counsel effectively and I continuously embrace additional responsibility in order to engage more meaningfully with the legislative process. Throughout my academic and professional career, I have used the lens of equity to contextualize California's policy issues. My time working in the CA State Legislature over the past 3 years has been a great learning experience and I feel that I can now take what I've gained back home to my community where I can more directly interact with constituents and local organizations and the local government.
My most recent job was working with the Inland Empire Labor Council (AFL-CIO) in Riverside. I made the move back to Fontana and began working in the political arm of the labor union where I engaged with union members on local issues and the 2021 November local city council and school board races in Moreno Valley.
Local government decisions and officials are what directly impact our day to day lives here and within the community. I understand the importance and I would be humbled to have the opportunity to work with you all and continue to expand upon my knowledge of local governments. Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Jennifer Garcia
