PURPOSE
To establish guidelines to present retention and longevity incentives through service awards and retirement gifts to full-time City employees.
GENERAL POLICY
The City of Fontana has developed a recognition program acknowledging employee’s dedicated service and commitment in support of the City’s goals and objectives leading to a positive and successful work environment.
PROVISIONS
Service Awards
Service awards recognize employees who have demonstrated their commitment to the City through continuous years of service. Based on the number of continuous years of service, service award pins are presented to employees in five-year increments after five (5) years of service up to 35 years of service.
The following service award pins are presented to eligible employees the year following the completion of each five-year increment.

Presentation of Service Awards
The annual recognition event date will be determined based on location availability and scheduling.
All service award pins are presented to employees by the respective Department Director or designee.
Thank you letters from the Mayor and City Council are given to each recipient.
The Mayor and City Council will make a formal presentation to employees receiving awards for 20 or more years of service.
The annual recognition event will be open only to those employees being recognized. Additional guests will not be permitted.
In the event that an employee’s service award pin is lost, the City will not be obligated to provide a replacement. A replacement may be made available depending on the cost and/or available inventory.
Eligibility for Service Awards
The City will recognize the following eligible employees:
Full-time employees who possess continuous years of service Full-time employees who possess consecutive full-time and part-time continuous years of service Retirement Gifts and Events
City contribution towards a retirement gift and/or contributions toward retirement events can be given in appreciation of dedicated service and commitment to the City of Fontana at the recommendation of the Department Head. The value of said contribution is based on years of continuous service and can be used for retirement gifts or retirement events only.
Service years do not include provisional appointments.
The value of the City contribution towards retirement gifts or events shall not exceed the following:

Presentation of Retirement Gifts and Events
Retirement gifts or events will be requested/purchased by the Department and presented at either, if applicable:
A retirement event
A regular City Council Meeting
On their final working day
Amounts are paid out of the Department’s departmental operating expenses.
Eligibility for Retirement Gifts and Events
Employees will be eligible for such retirement gifts or events provided that they give at least two (2) weeks’ notice of their last working date and will work through their final date on payroll. draft
