TITLE:
Receive Report and Consider Approval of City Council Letter to California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in Support of Joining a Rural Regional Energy Network (REN) ISSUE:
Mendocino Council of Governments (MCOG) has requested a letter of support from the City of Fort Bragg in the creation of a Rural Regional Energy Network (REN) to be sent to the California Public Utilities Commission.
ANALYSIS:
Councilmember Tess Albin-Smith serves on the board of MCOG who is in support of creating a Rural Regional Energy Network that would allow the City to participate in future portfolio of Humboldt and Mendocino County purchase of power solutions and for rural communities.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the attached letter of support and direct staff to send the support letter to the California Public Utilities Commission.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION(S):
There are no alternative recommendations available today. This action is non-binding until a Rural Regional Energy Network is actually created and approved by all parties concerned.
If a Rural Regional Energy Network is successfully created, staff will return to the Council requesting direction or action to join.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There are no fiscal impacts to the budget connected to the letter of support.
GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS IMPACT:
The creation of a Rural Regional Energy Network will assist the member public agencies to achieve deep energy savings in our region and accelerate an equitable transition to a green and resilient economy that will result in a reduction of Greenhouse Gas.
CONSISTENCY:
This letter of support is consist with the needs of the City and its ability to meet future energy independence and rural resiliency.
IMPLEMENTATION/TIMEFRAMES:
Dependent upon the creation of a Rural REN.
