denied the drilling and infrastructure for oil and gas
development on the Fort Bragg mill site was placed on
the ballot. It was passed by the voters of Fort Bragg.

Measure C was written by Fort Bragg residents who saw
the dangerous potential of oil and gas development at
the mill site. The importance of this issue and the Local Coastal Plan were overlooked and poorly handled by the
California Coastal Commission. The lapse of
responsibility was never acknowledged.

The mill site is the only large area zoned for heavy
industrial use within the city limits.

The California Coastal Commission was requested twice
to make measure C part of the Local Coastal Plan. The
Coastal Commission denied the request on the grounds
that energy development was the primary objective on
the Local Coastal Plan.

The latest Trump proposal is an example of the federal
government and the Coastal Commission favoring large
fossil fuel corporations and their profits. The wishes of the local communities trying to protect themselves, their local environments and economies were ignored.

Measure C, however, is still in place. Fort Bragg citizens should support and push the Coastal Commission to
include it in the local coastal plan.

Sixty five California cities and counties took action
opposing Trump's new proposal for fossil fuel and
development in the Pacific Ocean. That ongoing
campaign now represents communities with 21.3 million
Californians - more than half the state's population.

Ashley Blacow, Pacific policy and communications
manager with Oceana, said, "Cities and counties across
the West Coast are forming a united front sending a
clear message to Washington, DC that our coast is not
for sale. proposal."
Oceana is the world's largest international advocacy
organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation.
