STAFF REPORT
City Council Agenda Item
DATE: May 19, 2025
TO: Honorable Mayor and Council Members
FROM: Bob Natt, Interim Public Works Director
THROUGH: Amy Nilsen, City Manager
SUBJECT: Approve a Supplemental Budget Request for Vehicle Replacement in Capital Outlay Fiscal Year (FY) 2024-25
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Approve a Supplemental Budget Request to increase Funds of Capital Outlay from FY 2024-25 to purchase a new vehicle for the Police Department.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Staff is requesting to increase funding in Capital Outlay to replace a pursuit vehicle for the Police Department. On March 3, 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM, the Fortuna Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a green motorcycle in the 300 block of 9th Street in Fortuna. The rider failed to comply and fled, prompting a brief vehicle pursuit. The chase ended when the pursuing police vehicle collided with private property, including a utility pole on the 800 block of O Street, which caused significant damage to the police vehicle.
An insurance claim was submitted, and the adjuster claimed the vehicle “Totaled” and will provide a salvage cost for the damaged vehicle. Staff received a quote for the vehicle to be fixed at a local autobody shop for $32,315.06, however, additional parts would be necessary, and the repairs didn’t include costs to repair the engine and operating components of the vehicle. Staff had to consider the safety of the officer, and that this vehicle is compromised.
Staff contacted Future Chevrolet, who originally sold the Tahoe’s to the City in February of 2023, and they had two 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe’s available and would not have any other law enforcement vehicles until 2026, so the City requested they hold one, which they agreed to.
Staff is requesting that the Council approve a Supplemental Budget Request (SBR) in the amount of $70,000 out of Capital Outlay to replace the vehicle. The insurer will deduct the cost of equipment removed from the vehicle to install on the new one including staff time. The price of a new Tahoe is $67,924.04, unequipped.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No overall fiscal impact. Approval of the recommended Supplemental Budget Request will increase $70,000 to the FY 2024-25 Capital Outlay budget, account 100-8000-2000 and increase $70,000 to the FY 2024-25 Reimbursement budget, account 100-4801.
