Inspiration and Concept
Our proposal for the Warm Springs Plaza in Fremont, CA, is inspired by the site and metaphors for innovation: “Lifting the Veil” and “Focusing the Lens.” We seek to reflect and extend the character of the new development through the introduction of our Artwork.
Our work, “Lifting the Veil/Focusing the Lens,” responds to the process of creating innovative ideas through discovery and fostering new ways of thinking and being. 17 INNOVATION TRANSFORMATION CONTEXT 18 19

“Lifting the Veil / Focusing the Lens”
The sculpture is designed to be interactive with light, both day and night. During the day the sun arcs over the forms and highlights the layers of color. During the night, a warm LED light illuminates the core from below, creating a dramatic beacon, symbolizing a bright idea. 21 LIVE WORK PLAY

26 INSPIRED BY INNOVATION:
Our proposal for the Warm Springs Plaza in Fremont, CA, is inspired by metaphors for innovation: “Lifting the Veil and Focusing the Lens.” The design features an inverted truncated cone from which we subtracted a form-volume to create the appearance of an upward opening: “Lifting the Veil” on one side, and a round aperture: “Focusing the Lens” on the other.
A WELCOMING GESTURE:
This carved out space is defined within the cone with a series of fins. Like lines of topography, they describe the curving form of the subtracted volume, connecting both sides with a continuous opening. This interior area invites the experiencer to peer through the space to the sky view framed by the upper opening. They are welcomed by the space.
INFORMED BY LANDSCAPE:
The top edge of both the outer cone and the inner fins is shaped with undulating curves, reminiscent of the nearby landscape. The surface of the outer cone is perforated in a series of lines, derived from an abstraction of the same landscape. With a gradual variation in thickness, they subtly imply the trees on the hills, the open mountaintops and the sky above.
ELEVATED BEACON:
This graceful assembly is all held aloft, eight feet above the site, on ten legs that meet the ground at angles taken from the shape above. Meeting the earth lightly in this manner creates a space under and around the work, providing opportunity to visually “breathe.” Elevating the sculpture on these legs positions the work as a beacon in the plaza and as an icon for the Innovation District.
COLOR AND CONTEXT:
The outer perforated cut metal cone screen will be painted gun-metal grey on its outside to correspond with the other metal objects at the site.
Its inside will be bright orange/gold referencing the panels of the railway fencing at the edge of the site. The 6”x6” I-profile legs will also be painted in the same gun-metal grey.
MODULAR ASSEMBLY:
The interior fins will be made from Koda XT polycarbonate in an array of fourteen colors, one per fin, ranging from deep green, through light green, yellow, and ending with a bright orange/gold, similar to the interior of the screen. Each fin will be composed of an assembly of parts held together by stainless steel circular disks. These disks, on either side of the panels, will allow for bolted connections, attaching each piece to another.
The fins will also be attached to the screen with continuous low-profile linear connections, more common for windows and signage.
SCALED TO SITE:
The sculpture is about 14’-4” by 15’-4” at its widest, at the top. It is 20’ tall, the maximum height allowed at the site. This drops down to 18’ at its lowest point. The cone goes from 12’ to 10’ tall, all sitting on legs which elevate it up 8’. The bottom of the cone ranges from 6’-11.5” to 7’-11.5”.
The legs angle down from here to a base dimension of 4’-7” by 2’-6.25”.
Our proposal is inspired by innovation to create a welcoming gesture that is informed by landscape, as an elevated beacon that uses color and context with a modular assembly that is scaled to site. 27 VEIL LANDFORM APERTURE

42 Maintenance
THE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS PROJECT ARE MINIMAL • The panels will be fabricated in KODA XT. KODA XT is a polycarbonate that is durable, shatter-proof, color fast, and light weight. It can be washed off or if tagged, cleaned with “That Orange Stuff.” • The steel will be factory finished with a polyurethane, high gloss finish, requiring minimal maintenance. • The Artwork should be reviewed on a quarterly basis or as needed to maintain cleanliness and and clarity of color. • Lighting maintenance is per manufacturer’s specifications. Normal life span for LED lighting, running from dusk to dawn is 20 years, with minimal degradation. 43 Budget 600,000
This is a ballpark budget. If selected, the budget will be refined through a design development process. The line items may vary from task to task, but the overall budget will not exceed $600,000.
