CURRENT CHICKENT REGULATIONS COMPARISON CITIES
San Jose It is unlawful for any person to maintain livestock or more than six (6) small animals [chickens] without a permit. Designated distances are the distance measured from the enclosure or structure housing such small animals to the nearest dwelling unit other than the permittee’s. More than 20 feet but less than 40 feet, 6 small animals. More than 40 feet but less than 50 feet, 10 small animals. More than 50 feet, 20 small animals.
Long Beach Live chickens may be kept or maintained on residential property within the City, provided that the chickens must be kept at least a minimum distance away from any other person’s dwelling, as follows: 1-4 chickens, 10 feet; 5-10 chickens, 35 feet; 11-20 chickens, 50 feet
Oakland It is unlawful for any person to keep any … chickens … in any enclosure in the city unless the exterior boundaries of said enclosures are more than twenty (20) feet from any dwelling, church or school.
Berkeley It is unlawful for any person to keep on any premises owned, occupied or controlled by them in the City any … chickens… unless such fowls or animals are kept in an enclosure, no part of which is within twenty-five feet of any dwelling house occupied by human beings; provided, however, that the dwelling house referred to above does not mean the house in which the person resides who keeps the fowls or animals; provided that any of said fowls or animals may be kept temporarily for purpose of sale at any shop or place of business where the same are bought, sold or dealt in. Alameda It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep on any premises owned, occupied or controlled by him/her or it in the City, any more than six (6) chickens … Any such fowl shall be kept in an enclosure, no part of which is within twenty (20°) feet of any dwelling house occupied by human beings.
Newark Animal fancier’s permit required when. Chickens… may be kept for noncommercial, recreational, educational or food source purposes upon parcels zoned but not developed for commercial or industrial purposes, and upon parcels zoned for agricultural (except open space) purposes, provided an animal fancier’s permit has been obtained from the animal control officer. The number of such animals allowed shall be based on parcel area, as follows: Parcels with an area of one acre or more: … twenty-five chickens, including two roosters... Parcels with an area of one-half acre or more: fifteen adult rabbits; or twenty chickens, including one rooster; or more than two geese; or six ducks; or three beehives; Parcels with an area of ten thousand square feet or greater: eight adult rabbits; or ten chickens, including one rooster; or more than two geese; or more than two ducks; or three beehives;
Union City Domestic animal/fowl or livestock shall be kept at the following minimum distances from any occupied building except the dwelling unit of the owner, licensed veterinary hospitals, kennels, grooming parlors and public and commercial horse facilities: Chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, pigeons or similar fowl ... 25 feet
Dublin No person shall keep more than two dogs or keep more than two cats, or keep any livestock as accessory to any dwelling unit located in any “R” zoning district as designated on the city zoning map except in accordance with the provisions of a valid animal fanciers permit issued by the Director.

San Jose
Up to 6 with permit. Proximity of livestock to dwelling unit. It is unlawful for any person to keep livestock within two hundred (200) feet of any dwelling unit other than the dwelling unit of the owner/guardian of the livestock or person with a right to control the livestock. It is unlawful for any person to keep livestock within thirty-five (35) feet of the dwelling unit of the owner/guardian of the livestock or the person with a right to control the livestock.
Long Beach Exactly (no more and no less than) two (2) live goats may be kept on residential property within the City
Oakland Legal as long as you don't sell the milk or slaughter the animal on your property.
Berkeley
It is unlawful for any person, firm, corporation or association to keep or permit to be kept more than two female goats over one year old within the City except in Zones VI and VII, as set out under the zoning ordinance of the City. (1923: 1918) The herding or keeping of sheep or male goats in any number or in any manner within the limits of the City is declared to be unlawful and is prohibited.
