Executive Summary: The purpose of this report is to facilitate the installation of street name signs on existing traffic signal poles and mast arms to improve wayfinding at signalized intersections and to replace existing signs as needed to conform with national standards for legibility and night-time reflectivity.
BACKGROUND: The City currently owns and maintains approximately 200 traffic signals, most of which were designed and installed prior to the 1990s and did not in clude any street name signs on the traffic signal poles or mast arms. Given that most of the City’s traffic signals are located at major intersections along regional routes of significance or at key access points into various commercial centers and neighborhoods, it is important to provide clear and consistent street name signs at traffic signals to provide wayfinding information for motorists. In addition, new national standards have been adopted that require larger letter sizes and improved reflectivity to support legibility of the signs during the day and night.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The proposed project will install standard street name signs at existing city operated traffic signals, specifically on traffic signal mast arms (where available) to maximize sign visibility. If signal mast arms are not available, the new street name signs will be installed on existing street light poles or signal poles as appropriate. The project will also remove existing street name signs at various signalized intersect ions as needed to standardize the street name sign installations at traffic signals throughout the city. Newer traffic signals are generally not included in this project as street name signs have been incorporated in recent signal installations.
