Overview
The I-880 Innovation Bridge and Trail Project will
connect the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART
Station and thousands of jobs and housing units within
Fremont’s Innovation District. The project also provides a transportation and recreation connection to the Bay
Trail. This bicycle and pedestrian path is a critical link in Fremont’s multimodal transportation network and is
designed to support increased travel in the area by
walking, bicycling and transit.
Objectives
• Provide a direct and safe bicycle/pedestrian route
from the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station
to the major employment center west of I-880.
• Complete the southernmost segment of the East Bay
Greenway regional trail (Reach 6) through Fremont
and connect to the nearby Bay Trail.
• Connect 4,000 new housing units within the Warm
Springs/South Fremont BART station area to major
employers (providing 40,000 jobs) and to regional
open spaces in the area.

allowed for completing the
project planning, environmental
clearance, and final design
phases. In early 2020, Caltrans
approved a Project Initiation
Document, which addresses the
general project scope. State and
Federal environmental
clearances are expected by
Spring 2023. Final design
activities are on-going.
Funding in the amount of $77.5
million is being pursued for right
of way acquisition, construction
management and construction.
Subject to funding availability,
construction could begin as soon
as Fall 2024 and be completed in
Summer 2027.

Features
• Due to the lack of space for a bridge column in the median of I-880, a cable-stay structure has been selected as the most cost-effective bridge type and will minimize impacts to freeway traffic during construction.
• The modern bridge design is marked by an architecturally significant 200-ft. tall pylon that is highlighted by a set of twisting cables that accentuate the curvature of the main span; this creative and unique design is intended to reflect the spirit of Fremont’s “Innovation District”.
• Portions of the trail connection (East Bay Greenway, Reach 6) from the BART station to the Bay Trail, have been completed by the West Access Bridge Project (opened in February 2022) and private development (northern area). The key “gap closures” are the trail along Kato Road (adjacent to Tesla factory), the bridge over I-880, the trail adjacent to the Alameda County flood control channel (between Landing Parkway and Fremont Boulevard), and a new pedestrian traffic signal on Fremont Boulevard at the trail crossing.
