Background Information:
Why do you wish to serve as a member of this Board or Commission:
After many years in high stress jobs in high tech, I am now enjoying life with a combination of entrepreneurial, nonprofit, and personal explorations. While the professional projects upon which I worked contributed in their own little way to the Internet and, therefore, to the quality of life, I finally have time to contribute more directly to the community. During my retirement, I am very interested in using my professional skills to benefit the community.
What would you bring by way of perspective or experience to this Board or Commission:
On a volunteer level, 1 am an executive mentor at the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University (SCU). This program pairs seasoned executives with early/mid-career social entrepreneurs who benefit either US underserved communities or global communities in developing countries. It is a great example of using professional skills to advise others. It is also extremely interesting to see how these skills apply to such a range of small businesses - smart solar irrigation, tech skills training through sports data analytics platforms, ethically sourced artisan retail, efficient market platforms for agriculture, ...
On a business level, I worked at startups, small companies, and established companies. Twice, I was fortunate to work at small companies that grew dramatically into large companies. This gave me the opportunity to grow from hands-on development to high level management. In these dynamic and diverse environments, my staff and | learned many things. We set strategy, developed roadmaps and the associated budgets, enabled roadmap execution and team productivity, fostered innovation, worked cross-functionally across business units, partnered with companies, enabled/delegated/made decisions, and motivated diverse team members across multiple geographies through good times and bad. I would hope that these skills and the associated connections would be useful to acting in a member-at-large role.
Employment/Volunteer Information:

Organization: Cisco Systems

Location: San Jose, CA
Position(s): eng manager, eng director, eng sr director, eng vp, general manager Responsibilities/accomplishments: many over the years but ultimately VP eng /GM of highly successful enterprise and data center product lines; also incubated a variety of innovative programs
Organization: Ultra Network Technologies
Dates: 1987-1993
Location: San Jose
Position(s): member of technical staff, project leader, eng manager Responsibilities/accomplishments: 20t employee of a startup that built high speed, pre-standard gigabit networks

two Cisco Pioneer Awards (awarded to core teams that innovate) Education information:
BS Computer Science and graduate studies at Northwestern University, Evanston IL Additional Information (Please provide any other information which you feel would be useful to the City Council in reviewing your application.)
I was already quite verbose on the other two questions. The only other two things I will mention are the following.
1. While I am already involved in Silicon Valley and East Bay volunteer efforts, I would like to extend my involvement to the Fremont business community.
2. I am very interested in leveraging my professional skills to benefit the community. I believe the economic development advisory commission member-at-large position would allow me to do so. I hope that Fremont continues to encourage and support businesses which, in turn, enhance the community through innovation and partnerships.
