Additional Information (Please provide any other information which you feel would be useful to the City Council in reviewing your application.)
I have been a caretaker and/or assisted in making medical and financial decisions at various times for various family members including my great aunt who suffered a stroke, my aunt who had depleted her resources by age 85 and my mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease and ultimately needed long term care outside her home. I still help my very active and capable tather of 93 years stay in his home independently. I can bring that perspective and experience to the table as Fremont works to provide services to this community. I also think the senior community has a lot to offer Fremont and would like to see ways to keep it involved and engaged.

Ralph J. Hansen, Jr. - Application to Fremont Senior Citizens Commission Background information:
Why do you wish to serve as a member of this Board or Commission:
As a member of the Fremont community for over 40 years, I feel I have much to contribute to the Senior Citizens Commission. I have seen many changes in this time - many for the better.
In particular, the progress in the Senior Center (now Age-Well Centers) has helped me greatly in improving my life. However, not all my experiences were good ones. This stemmed most always from unique individuals having unique ideas. For the most part, these people have been told to leave though through no action on my part.
Even more significantly, the advancement of the paratransit program, now Ride-On-Tri- Cities (ROTC), has helped me tremendously in moving about the community safely and efficiently. I now serve on the ROTC Advisory Committee, playing an active role in representing the disabled community. I want to give something back to my community for assisting me through some tough times.
Unlike most other Commissioners, I have had recent, direct experience with a common, serious misfortunes/problems/issues/calamities - falls. In the past four years, I have had three falls leading to three hospitalizations, two surgeries, three stays in rehab facilities, and three recoveries at home. Dealing with these health difficulties gives me a unique, real- world perspective on life as a senior.
What would you bring by way of perspective or to this Board or Commission:
Like many seniors I have had a difficult life. Others can appreciate my story, as it might relate closely with their own life experiences.
I was born in Oakland in 1953. I was an only child and never married. I had severe health problems that were difficult for others to tolerate. In 1999 at the age of 46, Kaiser hospital made an offer of brain surgery to correct my epilepsy that I had since I was 11 years old.
Always having ideas of my own, I gave a piece of my mind (brain) to Stanford University. The surgery has worked to some extent. Not totally. But it has prevented me from driving, which is a true handicap living in California.
PAGE 2 - A
Ralph J. Hansen, Jr. - Application to Fremont Senior Citizens Commission Within the past four years I have had three serious fails requiring hospitalization. First, in August 2021, I fell in my front yard breaking my right hip. An ambulance was called to take me to Kaiser Hospital. There I had surgery on the right hip. I was released home needing to use a wheelchair. Second, in February 2022, I fell again and broke my right leg getting out of bed. This time I was able to call for the ambulance myself and was again admitted to Kaiser for surgery. I was released to a nursing Hayward where gunshots could be heard nightly, and the staff was demoralized. This was an extremely depressing time in my life.
Finally, I was released home using a walker.
The third time I fell in the laundry room, then dragged myself to bed. For about a week in late 2022 | hobbled around my house in severe pain. Then finally I took a Lyft ride and was admitted to Kaiser again. This time I did not require surgery for my broken knee. I was released to Windsor Country Care where they had an excellent rehab staff. I stayed there during Christmas and the New Year where this wonderful staff sang Christmas carols for me. I was quite moved and quickly realized that not every medical facility needed to be a negative experience.
While in the nursing home I knew I had to regain strength at home which previously I had been unable to do. So I offered a friend a year's worth of free rent if he came to live in my house. This was excellent as my friend took me up on it and / did, in fact, convalesce and regain strength rather quickly. I moved from wheelchair to walker to cane within a years' time. It is still difficult to get around, but, I know i have no choice. I do strenuous daily exercises to assure that i keep the strength I have.
I believe these experiences can help others realize that they can recover and improve their lot in life with hope, persistence, and friendship. Never give up! PAGE 2 - B
