Executive Summary: The City’s Information Technology Services department has scheduled the replacement of the Wi-Fi access points in the City’s Facilities. It is crucial for all City facilities to be equipped with up-to-date wireless access points to ensure the City’s operations continue to run optimally. The current access points have been in operation since 2018 and have reached the end of their useful life.
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager, or designee, to (1) issue a purchase order to Saitech Inc. in the amount of $245,490.80 for the Purchase of Cisco Wi-Fi Access Points and Meraki Licenses for the City’s Facilities; and (2) execute any implementing documents and take any implementing actions as necessary.
BACKGROUND: The Wi-Fi access points currently installed at the City’s facilities have been in operation since 2018. The current equipment has reached the end of its useful life.
Additionally, the current Wi-Fi access points do not support the latest Wi-Fi standards, thus affecting the network internet connection reliability.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The proposed replacement models support the latest (Wi-Fi 7) Wi-Fi network standards. These latest standards allow for faster network speeds, enhanced security and better coverage and connection reliability with radios supporting multiple Wi-Fi frequencies with integrated omnidirectional antennas.
The new Cisco Wi-Fi access points will enable City Staff to connect their devices more reliably to the internal City network (Intranet) and the Internet. Furthermore, the new Cisco access points will provide visitors to City facilities with faster and more reliable Wi-Fi connections.
