Artist's Statement
I'm an ecological sculptor who designs and fabricates benches and sculptures repurposed from salvage steel propane tanks. My work is whimsical, naturalistic, and functional. My bench designs include contemporary riffs on furniture from Victorian and Mid Century eras. My biomorphic sculptures abstractly reference a site's native animal species with unique, pedestrian scaled objects that are visually compelling and create a sense of place
I have completed dozens of public art commissions across the US for parks, streetscapes, schools, hospitals, museums and commercial properties. My work has been honored with national awards for its sustainable, innovative and technical qualities including Most Interesting Products' from the American Society of Landscape Architects and 'Exhibitor's Choice Gold Award' at the Smithsonian Craft Show. CODAworx named me as one of 2021's top 25 international "Creative Revolutionaries" leading changes forward in the arts. I have been granted a series of design and utility patents to protect the originality of my work My artwork engages the public on multiple levels. Aesthetically the forms and colors appeal to people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Its human scale invites interaction, by touching, sitting and in some cases climbing. As people look more closely they notice surface corrosion, manufacturing weld seams and fitting ports in odd locations and it dawns on them that it's made from reused materials.

In that moment of realization my hope is that they are inspired to consider new ways to reuse materials in their own lives. My work is incredibly green. My eco-friendly process uses a locally sourced material, has a minimal manufacturing carbon footprint and produces very durable low maintenance objects which contain 99% post-consumer reused content. The curved forms and substantial wall thickness of propane tanks gives my work a structural integrity that can withstand many decades of life in the public realm including extreme weather and heavy pedestrian traffic. My benches are ADA compliant and free of safety hazards. www.colinselig.com

Design & Budget: Centerville Community Park
I have created a unique collection of designs for this proposal for public art for Centerville Community Park.

The sculpture concepts for the rookery are playful arachnids designed for human interaction. The Large Spider has been revised to include seating elements. They range in height between four and six feet tall to match the scale of the site and comply with the parameters suggested by The City's risk manager.

The site furnishings for the Bocce Complex are a series of bench designs that highlight spherical elements, a reference to bocce balls. In one of the designs it appears a ball is stuck in the middle of the seat and backrest.

The colors of the renderings in this proposal are possibilities. I've used these colors in the past and they fit the theme of vibrancy as suggested by Art Review Board. However l am open to alternative colors.

I have offered five different budget options including exclusively sculpture, exclusively seating, and a mixture. The cost of each work is presented in a menu format so the Art Review Board is fee to select their own combination. www.colinselig.com

PARK AT
Muttville, in San Francisco, focuses on senior rescue dogs. Offering a new paradigm for shelters, the dogs stay in a house-like environment without cages where they can wander from room to room helping them to socialize and stay adoptable. Opened in 2024, visitors to their new facility are greeted by three large Bone Benches along the exterior sidewalk. The seat dividers, each uniquely shaped like a specific dog breed's head, were required by The City to prevent unwanted sleeping. Dimensions: 12' × 2' × 3' www.colinselig.com

ARTIST COLIN SELIG DISPLAYS HIS DALÍ-ESQUE LIPS BENCH AT LONGHOUSE RESERVE'S EXTERIORS EXHIBIT. BY ERIN RILEY
« | wanted to take a ubiquitous, utilitarian object that would otherwise go thing I recognized when I saw the tank on my property is how much to waste and transform it into something sensuous in form and sophis- energy must have gone into forming the thick steel into that capsulelike I ticated in function," says artist Colin Selig about his striking Lips shape," says Selig.

Though the Lips Bench's design pays homage to Dalí, its form is inspired by The "Exteriors" exhibit, the largest in the foundation's history, features 81 the work of Charles and Ray Eames and their innovative approach to molding outdoor sculptures from a global array of artists, including Martin Puryear materials. "Not only was their visual style groundbreaking, buttheir process of and Mira Nakashima, as well as pieces by Hamptonites such as Max Eicke, molding plywood resulted in a whole new set of design methods," says Selig.
