My name is Ginny Barnes and I am a Fresno community resident in district 3. I am speaking in solidarity with my community of dedicated housing justice advocates to urge City leaders to approve the top 10 policy recommendations identified in the Here to Stay report to support tenants and prevent displacement.

While our housing crisis has a number of stakeholders in Fresno, our solutions should prioritize the health and safety of the people who will be living in homes, feeding their families, and sleeping in a warm bed after a long day--not developers, corporate landlords, and real estate investors profiting from them.

I'd also like to recognize the Fresno residents who have volunteered countless hours, taken time off of work and school, taken time away from loved ones and have risked retaliation from landlords and property management to share difficult and heartfelt testimony about how they, their families and neighbors are struggling under Fresno’s current housing system. Our housing justice advocates show up everyday for their community, and their dissent is patriotic.

Community voices are essential, and housing advocates deserve our City leaders’ respect and recognition.

Thousands of Fresno residents have provided public input and have been calling on the City to take immediate action on the Fresno housing crisis. I add my voice to theirs and ask that the city implements the top 10 policy recommendations in the housing Here to Stay report.

Thank you,
