National Gun Violence Awareness Month 2022
WHEREAS: Each day, nearly 110 American lives are lost due to gun violence, homicides alone totaling to over 19,000 lives each year, on a global scale Americans are 25 times more likely to pass away life to gun violence than other developed countries; and
WHEREAS: Originating in early 2013, after a 15-year-old girl fell victim to gun violence, a campaign was created in honor of Hadiya Pendleton to spread awareness of gun violence and the importance of gun safety in the US; and
WHEREAS: the month of June has then been dedicated to spreading awareness for those affected by gun violence, survivors and the victims lost. Orange symbolizes caution when it comes to handling any firearms, leading to ‘Wear Orange Day’ falling on every first Friday of June representing those who support the campaign nationwide; and
WHEREAS: the City of Fresno encourages everyone to join the awareness and wear orange on every first Friday of June starting the 3rd of June 2022, to help raise awareness about gun violence and honor the survivors and victims lost.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that Nelson Esparza, the Fresno City Council , and Mayor do hereby proclaim, the 3rd day of June 2022 as:
“National Gun Violence Awareness Month”
in the City of Fresno,
