Luis C. Santana
WHEREAS, Luis C. Santana arrived in Fresno, California in 1991 from his native childhood home of Brazil in South America; and
WHEREAS, Luis C. Santana attended California State University, Sacramento earning him a Master’s Degree in Social Work. With a strong belief and a simple mission that a child’s path toward a bright future is paved with books to increase their reading ability, he fo unded Reading and Beyond in 1999 with the support of First Covenant Church in Fresno, California; and
WHEREAS, Luis C. Santana has grown the Reading and Beyond Organization from a small neighborhood literacy program to a cradle -to-career family service organization serving thousands of families and children across Central California; and
WHEREAS, Luis C. Santana has and continues to serve on many boards and commissions such as the Fresno Compact Board, Fresno Count y Cradle -to-Career Partnership Table and the California Partnership for the San Joa quin Valley. He currently serves on the Before and After School Program and the Saint Agnes Medical Center Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Luis C. Santana has received many honors, he was the first recipient in the central valley to receive the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, the Local Hero Award by Union Bank and Valley Public Television along with Portraits of Success from KSEE 24. In 2019, he received the Ethical Leadership Hon or Award from the California State University Fresno Ethics Center for 20 years of Service; and
WHEREAS, The City of Fresno recognizes all of your many accomplishment s over the years and we truly wish you the best on your retirement and future endeavors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, Mayor Jerry Dyer and the Fresno City Council, do hereby proclaim November 3rd, 2022, to be:
“Luis C. Santana Day”
in the City of Fresno.
