NOTICES

PUBLIC NOTICE
Klay Thompson is back.

And it didn’t take long for Thompson
to prove he should be back to his NBA
All-Star self in no time.

The Golden State guard made his
season debut Sunday in the Warriors’
96-82 victory against the Cavaliers. It
was Thompson’s first game since Game
6 of the 2019 NBA Finals – a span cov-
ering 941 days following a torn ACL and
Achilles tendon.
“Very special moment,” Thompson
said. “I’ll never forget this night. I’ll nev-
er forget the reception Warriors fans
gave us, especially myself. Gosh, it was
fun. It was worth every single day of be-
ing away. All the conditioning days, it
was worth every single moment. I’m so
grateful to just compete again. It’s been
a long time. I’m also proud of myself for
just persevering. I’m not going to say it
was equivalent to winning a champion-
ship, but man, it was pretty freaking
close.”
Thompson, who was in the starting
lineup alongside longtime teammates
Steph Curry and Draymond Green, had
17 points, including seven quick points
at the start of the third quarter, on 7-
for-18 shooting and 3-for-8 on 3-point-
ers in 20 minutes.
“Wasn’t shy was he? Not that we
would ever expect Klay to be shy,” War-
riors coach Steve Kerr said. “I was
amazed at his poise out there and his
confidence after being out for so long. …
A beautiful night.”
Of the 18 shots in 20 minutes, Curry
said, “That is so Klay Thompson.”
Thompson dropped in a runner in the
paint with 11:20 left in the first quarter
on the Warriors’ first possession, but
Kerr said he didn’t call the play for
Thompson, who missed his first three 3-
point attempts and checked out with
7:37 remaining in the first quarter.

But Thompson started to find his
game in his second stint. He drove to the
rim for a one-handed dunk with 2:56 re-
maining in the second quarter. “It felt so
good to throw that down. I did not ex-
pect that,” he said.

Then he made his first 3-pointer with
1:18 left in the half. He had explosiveness
and his shot.

It might just take a few games – or
more – before Thompson is back to All-
Star Klay Thompson. But it’s clear
Thompson is ready to play and it
shouldn’t take long before he is back in
game form.
“He got a lot of shots that I think he’ll
make consistently that he didn’t make,”
Kerr said, “but he also made a bunch
that were tough shots and some big
ones, too. … The adrenaline and high
from tonight will come down eventually,
and he’s going to have to work his way
through that over the next few games
and continue to build up his endurance.

The rhythm and timing will come but it’s
not going to be smooth sailing. He un-
derstands that.”
While it was an important game for
Thompson, the Warriors have larger
long-term goals that include competing
for a championship. How Thompson
plays now is important, but not as im-
portant as how he is playing in April,
May and perhaps June.

The Warriors are one of the best
teams in the league at 30-9 – tied with
Phoenix for first place in the Western
Conference going into Monday. With a
healthy Thompson on a deep roster, the
Warriors are capable of returning to the
Finals for the first time since 2019.

Thompson, 32, tore the ACL in his left
knee in Game 6 of the 2019 Finals and
missed the 2019-20 season. Just before
the start of the 2020-21 season, he tore
his right Achilles tendon, missing all of
that season, too.
“Tonight is all about showing our ap-
preciation for what he’s had to go
through individually and expressing our
affection for him, and I know our fans
are going be to going crazy,” Kerr said
before the game. “It’s going to be emo-
tional. In a lot of ways, it’ll be a very diffi-
cult game just trying to lock in and focus
while something much bigger than the
outcome is actually happening, and
that’s the challenge for the group is to
try to focus amidst all this emotion.”
Warriors players wore Thompson’s
No. 11 jersey into San Francisco’s Chase
Center, and Thompson also received a
standing ovation from Warriors fans
when he was introduced as a starter.

The Warriors also played a welcome
back tribute video on the scoreboard.

There was much speculation about
Thompson’s return date. Just before
Christmas? On Christmas? Jan. 2?
The seven-time All-Star started
dropping hints six days ago, and on Sat-
urday, Kerr told reporters it wasn’t his
news reveal and instructed them to
watch their phones for a social media
post.
“IM SO EXCITED TO SEE YALL DUB-
NATION ! LETS GET IT,” Thompson
posted Saturday on Instagram.

In a video shortly after posted on the
Warriors’ Twitter feed, Thompson said,
“I hate to use the phrase ‘can’t wait’ be-
cause I love to be present in my life. But I
cannot wait to play in front of our fans
again. I really, really enjoy being a War-
rior.”
Thompson wasn’t the only one look-
ing forward to his much-awaited return.
“I have no doubt when Klay walks on-
to the floor for the first time, I will never
forget that game,” Kerr told reporters
Saturday. “It will stand out as one of the
highlights of my entire basketball exis-
tence just because of who Klay is and
how much he has meant to our fran-
chise and to the Bay area and to me per-
sonally and to his teammates.”
Returning from an Achilles injury
isn’t easy and couple that with an ACL
injury, Thompson went through gruel-
ing rehabilitation to put himself in this
position. Kobe Bryant struggled to re-
turn from his Achilles injury, but that
was later in his career. Kevin Durant,
Thompson’s former teammate in Gold-
en State, came back from an Achilles in-
jury (sustained in the 2019 Finals) and
re-established himself as one of the
game’s best players. Durant is an MVP
candidate this season.
“We’re going to ease him into his
role,” Kerr said.

USA TODAY
Warriors guard Klay Thompson celebrates his 1,800th 3-point basket during the third quarter Sunday against the Cavaliers. D. ROSS CAMERON/USA TODAY SPORTS Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm put on
the type of birdie barrage at the Sentry
Tournament of Champions where it
didn’t seem fair that one of them had to
lose.

In the end, the 28-year-old Aussie
answered every birdie by the World No. 1
with one of his own, shooting 8-under-
par 65 in the final round for a one-stroke
victory in Hawaii.
“Mate, it was intense,” Smith said.
“Unreal round, something I’ll never for-
get for sure.”
It was a record-shattering perform-
ance as a soft and defenseless Planta-
tion Course at Kapalua took another
beating to par. On another glorious
windless day, Smith signed for a total of
34-under 258, the most under par in a
72-hole event since 1950. Smith, who
won the Sony Open in Hawaii in 2020,
also completed the Hawaii double, join-
ing Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh,
Zach Johnson and Justin Thomas as
players who have won both Tour stops
in Hawaii.
“Hawaii reminds me so much of
where I grew up, it’s insane,” he said.
“The grass that we hit off, the greens be-
ing quite slow and grainy. Yeah, it’s awe-
some; I love it here.”
Smith proved once again that he’s ca-
pable of being a big-game hunter and
more than just a golfer with a mullet be-
loved on social media. He previously
knocked off Thomas in singles at the
2019 Presidents Cup. This time, he du-
eled Rahm, the U.S. Open champion and
World No. 1, head-to-head over the
weekend. In the final round, Smith
jumped in front with a birdie at the
fourth hole, wedging to 5 feet and going
out in 32 to lead by two.
“I think the biggest difference was
those first six holes today should have
been a little bit better,” said Rahm, who
managed one birdie during that stretch.

He cut the deficit to one with a birdie
at 11, but Smith, who loves to fish nearly
every day when he is at home in Florida,
reeled in three birdies in a row starting
at No. 13 to match Rahm birdie for birdie.

Rahm, who equaled the Tour record
for birdies in a 72-hole event with 32,
pushed Smith to the finish line, forcing
him to make one more birdie from 3 feet,
6 inches at the last hole to clinch his
fourth career PGA Tour title.
“There’s many reasons why Jon
Rahm’s the best player in the world and I
witnessed it over the weekend,” Smith
said. “But to be able to hold him off,
yeah, it was quite satisfying, I guess.”
Smith made only three bogeys during
the tournament and none over the
weekend 36 holes. He opened with 65
and followed with a pair of 64s but that
was only good enough to share the 54-
hole lead with Rahm, who established a
tournament 18-hole scoring record on
Saturday with a round of 61 (set earlier
in the day by Thomas). The third-round
scoring average (67.711) was the lowest
in a single round since the event moved
to The Plantation Course in 1999.
“Golf fans just need to understand
what cause scores. I think everybody,
they just see, ‘Oh, they’re hitting it so far
now, that’s why it’s so low.’ It’s like no,
it’s so low because it’s so soft and if you
give us soft conditions, fairways this
big, course this short, we’re going to
shoot nothing,” said Thomas, who ap-
parently considers 7,600-yard courses
to be “short” these days. “Then if you
give us not very much wind, we’re going
to shoot even lower.”
Matt Jones, who shot 62-61 on the
weekend, was the third player to set the
course record and break Els’ 31-under
total record for 72-hole score in relation
to par, which Els set at this tournament
in 2003. Jones finished alone in third. It
wasn’t lost on Rahm how ridiculously
well both he and Jones played and nei-
ther went home with a trophy.
“It’s kind of weird when you look for-
ward in the records that there’s two of
us that beat (the lowest 72-hole) score
and lost by one and two,” he said.

Reigning FedExCup champion Pat-
rick Cantlay (67) was alone in fourth, a
distant eight strokes behind Smith. Col-
lin Morikawa, the World No. 2, fired a 62
on Sunday to finish in a tie for fifth with
Thomas and Daniel Berger.

Smith’s victory continues an inter-
esting trend of alternating victories be-
tween New Orleans and Hawaii. His first
win was the Zurich Classic of New Or-
leans in 2017 with Jonas Blixt. His sec-
ond came at the 2020 Sony Open in Ha-
waii. He then again won the Zurich last
year with fellow Aussie Marc Leishman
before his win this weekend at Kapalua.

Smith didn’t waste any time achiev-
ing one of his goals for the new year – he
climbed into the top 10 in the world for
the first time in his career.
“That’s really cool,” Smith said. “It’s
nice that that’s done and dusted. Hope-
fully I can keep cruising up those world
rankings.”
