A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, AFFI RMING SOLIDARITY WITH
THE NORTH AMERICAN SIKH COMMUNITY IN THE FACE
OF INTERNATIONAL THREATS
WHEREAS, Sikhs make up one of the lar gest South Asian communities in the United States, with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, and today, they reside in numerous states across the nation, including California, Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia, and many others; and
WHEREAS, Fresno is home to a vibrant and thriving Sikh community, contributing to the cultural diversity and social fabric of our city; and WHEREAS, Canadian Prime Minister Ju stin Trudeau, relying on intelligence gathered by Canada and other Five Eye members, publicly a lleged the involvement of the Government of India in the assassinati on of a Canadian citizen and Sikh leader, Mr.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada, and credible reports have emerged suggesting that Sikh Americans may face similar threats on U. S. soil, as warned by the FBI and law enforcement agencies; and
WHEREAS, the Government of India has been accused of extrajudicial violence and means to suppress its crit ics both within India and abroad, raising concerns for the safety of Sikhs and other minorities in the United States; and WHEREAS, India's policy and practice of committing atrocity crimes against Sikhs and other minorities, as well as its relentless intimidati on and persecution of those engaged in lawful speech, call for immediate attention and action.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Fresno as

follows:
1. The City of Fresno affirms its solid arity with the No rth American Sikh community and expresses its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Sikhs residing within its jurisdiction.
2. The City of Fresno calls upon federa l and state partners to take immediate action to support the safety and security of the Sikh community in the United States.
3. The City of Fresno urges all concer ned parties, both at the federal and international levels, to act swiftly and decisively to address these pressing issues and protect the rights and safety of Sikhs and other minority communities.
