WHEREAS , the City Council of Fresno (Fresno) recognizes and proclaims the month of June 2024 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other (LGBTQIA+) PRIDE Month throughout the City of Fresno; and
WHEREAS, the month of June was chosen to commemorate the dedication and bravery of those who led the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Tavern in Greenwich Village, New York City, which sparked the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement; and
WHEREAS, Fresno joins Community Link’s Fresno Rainbow Pride and communities throughout the Central Valley to observe Pride Month with a flag raising ceremony to honor the history of the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement and to support the rights of all citizens to experience equality, inclusiveness, and freedom from discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the rainbow and Progressive Pride flag s are recognized as symbols of pride, inclusion, and support for social movements advocating for LGBTQIA+ people in society, including marginalized LGBTQIA+ communities of color and the Transgender community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fresno is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equality for LGBTQIA+ individuals, acknowledging their significant contributions to the cultural, civic, and economic successes of our city, state, and country, and recognizing the ongoing need for education and awareness to end discrimination and prejudice; and
WHEREAS, celebrating Pride Month fosters awareness, provides support and advocacy for Fresno’s LGBTQIA+ community, and is an opportunity to engage in dialogue to strengthen alliances, build acceptance, and advance equal rights; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Progressive Pride flag will be raised on Friday, June 7, 2024, recognizing all LGBTQIA+ residents whose influential and lasting contributions to our neighborhoods make the City of Fresno a vibrant community in which to live, work, and visit.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we, Council President Annalisa Perea, Mayor Jerry P. Dyer, and the Fresno City Councilmembers do hereby proclaim the Month of June 2024 to be:
“LGBTQIA+ Pride Month”
in the City of Fresno.
