WHEREAS, Disability Voting Rights Week is September 9 through September 13, 2024, and the National Voter Registration Day is September 17, 2024, and California High School Voter Education weeks are September 16 through September 27, 2024; and
WHEREAS the Fresno City Clerk, Fresno County Clerk and California Secretary of State are committed to strengthening democracy by encouraging voter registration and increasing participation in all elections by all eligible Californians; and
WHEREAS, there are over 38 million eligible voters with disabilities, and the disability community has a critical interest in policies and decisions made and enacted at local, state, and national levels that impact our lives directly, and ensuring people with disabilities have access to voting is essential if these policies are to meet the real needs of people with disabilities in our communities; and
WHEREAS, there are over 265,250 active registered voters in the City of Fresno and up to 60,000 more un- registered but eligible persons within the City; and
WHEREAS, 16- and 17-year-olds can now pre-register to vote and automatically become active voters when they turn 18 and pre-registration has been shown to increase the likelihood of participation once the pre- registrant turns 18; and
WHEREAS, the Fresno City Clerk and Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters websites provide links to the Secretary of State's website for easy online voter registration for all eligible individuals and the ability to verify one’s registration status and information.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Fresno City Council hereby recognizes and proclaims September 9 – 13, 2024, as DISABILITY VOTING RIGHTS WEEK and September 17, 2024, as VOTER REGISTRATION DAY and September 16 – 27, 2024 as California HIGH SCHOOL VOTER EDUCATION WEEKS and encourages all eligible residents including our County’s 16- and 17-year-olds to register to vote and be active participants in the democratic process in the City and County of Fresno.
