CITY OF FRESNO
Office of City Council Vice President Mike Karbassi
WHEREAS, Carol Lewis was born and raised in Sacramento, California. She attended Sierra Joint Union High School and graduated in the year 1962. She married the love of her life George Lewis and raised 5 beautiful children. Upon her husband’s death, Ms. Lewis raised her children as a single parent, always pushing them to be the best they could be. She was an active member of her church where she sang, played the piano, and taught Sunday school classes; and
WHEREAS, Carol Lewis began her career in Clovis Unified School District (CUSD) in 1974. For decades, she gave her heart and talents to children at Pinedale and Nelson Elementary Schools. Her heart has always belonged to the community of Pinedale, which she called her home for most of her life. Mrs. Lewis, a selfless educator, put forth every effort to help students succeed. Her library was open far past the usual closing hour, so local high school and intermediate students could access resources that they may not otherwise have had. Mrs. Lewis retired from Pinedale Elementary in the Fall of 2017; and
WHEREAS , Mrs. Lewis’ favorite past time was spending time with her family. She was extremely proud of her 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She loved sports like football and baseball, anything her grandchildren played thrilled her. She enjoyed books, reading, and crocheting. Her children were always proud to call her mom. Her selfless acts of kindness, her support for the community of Pinedale, and her years dedicated to CUSD continue to amaze them; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Lewis taught so many students the love of reading. Her stories in the library would take kids away to faraway places and empowered them to reach further for their dreams. Whether she provided a granola bar, a big hug, a warm smile, or said something silly to make them laugh, students always walked away from Mrs. Lewis feeling like they were truly somebody important; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Lewis, will never be forgotten. She left a lasting legacy of love and touched countless lives. Her career was defined by 43 years of opening the minds of students with the power of reading. She was a woman who believed that one was only as limited as their imagination. Literacy opens doors of education to all. Mrs. Lewis held that door open, and we are forever grateful.
