WHEREAS, Autism Awareness Month, observed nationally each April, offers an opportunity to raise understanding, foster inclusion, and celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives of people with autism; and
WHEREAS, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, learn, and interact with others, with 1 in 31 children in the United States diagnosed according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC (2020); and
WHEREAS, in Fresno County, the prevalence of autism is 13.5 per 1,000 children, highlighting the importance of local awareness, early diagnosis, and access to support services for individuals on the spectrum and their families; and
WHEREAS, Easterseals Central California has served as a vital resource for families across Central California, providing high-quality services and advocacy for children and adults with autism and other disabilities for over 75 years; and
WHEREAS, through its dedicated staff and inclusive programming, Easterseals Central California empowers individuals with autism to reach their full potential by promoting independence, inclusion, and belonging in every facet of community life; and
WHEREAS, we are proud to recognize organizations like Easterseals Central California for their commitment to building a more equitable and compassionate society where all individuals, regardless of ability, are celebrated and supported; and
WHEREAS, individuals with autism contribute in countless unique ways to the cultural, educational, and economic fabric of our city, and it is essential to promote public awareness that fosters acceptance, breaks down stigmas, and ensures access to opportunities for every person on the spectrum.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we, Councilmember Annalisa Perea, Mayor Jerry P. Dyer, and the Fresno City Councilmembers, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2025 to be:
“Autism Awareness Month”
in the City of Fresno.
