Bryson DeChambeau is perhaps the
most interesting man in professional
golf.

The 2020 U.S. Open
champion is a social
media star, from his Tik-
Tok page to his YouTube
videos. He also made
waves this year when he
put 3D-printed irons
into his golf bag, some-
thing that has led to top-10 finishes in
the first two majors of the year.

When it comes to boring, DeCham-
beau is the polar opposite. He has be-
come a fan favorite again in recent
months because of his social presence,
a title he didn’t have in the months after
his move to LIV Golf. But this week, as
he prepared for the U.S. Open at Pine-
hurst No. 2, he is preaching boring.
“If I get my irons in a place where I’m
hitting it in the middle of the greens and
just playing boring golf, that’s the goal
for me this week is try to play as boring a
golf as possible,” DeChambeau said
Tuesday.

But that’s the challenge that Pine-
hurst No. 2 in North Carolina presents.

While it can reward big tee shots, it’s a
ball-striker’s course that will penalize
shots barely offline, and the putting sur-
faces are punishing to any shots that
aren’t in the correct location.
“Looking forward to a tough test of
golf out here. Pinehurst is no joke,” De-
Chambeau said. “You have to hit it in the
middle of the greens. And this is a Boo
Weekley quote, but the center of the
green never moves, so I’ll try to focus
on that this week.”
DeChambeau has become so popu-
lar in part because he goes against the
grain and is willing to try things no one
else does, and he does it spectacularly.

From single-length irons, swinging out
of his shoes on drives and tinkering
with every little aspect of his swing,
he’s not afraid to go out on a limb to
gain an advantage while on the course.

However, at a major championship
test that’s a bit different than others,
don’t expect DeChambeau to swing for
the fences on every tee box.
“It stinks hitting a 6-iron off the tee
compared to a driver, but sometimes
you’ve got to do it and you’ve got to
make the right decision for shooting
the lowest score out here,” DeCham-
beau said. “There’s numerous holes
like 3, I’d love to go for that green every
single day, and I may go for it. I don’t
know, you never know with me. Cer-
tainly on the tee box if it’s downwind,
I’ll give it a go probably.”
DeChambeau finished a shot be-
hind Xander Schauffele at the PGA
Championship, finishing at 20 under.

It’s more than likely the winning score
will be significantly less than that this
weekend, but that doesn’t mean De-
Chambeau won’t entertain the crowds
as he has during the first two majors of
the year.
“I’m looking forward to a great chal-
lenge this week,” DeChambeau said.
“It’s a lot of boring golf. It’s definitely
different than Valhalla, but I’ll try to do
my best to show the crowd some fun
drives and some hopefully long-made
putts.”

golf’ key at Pinehurst

Nearly one month after Rory McIl-
roy filed for divorce from Erica Stoll,
the four-time major champion con-
firmed that he’s reconciled with his
wife of seven years after the pair “re-
solved our differences.”
An attorney representing McIlroy
filed a motion to voluntarily dismiss
the divorce documents on Tuesday,
The Guardian reported. The an-
nouncement comes days before the
start of the U.S. Open, an event McIl-
roy last won in 2011.
“There have been rumors about my
personal life recently, which is unfor-
tunate,” McIlroy said in a statement to
the outlet. “Responding to each rumor
is a fool’s game.
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I
have realized that our best future was
as a family together. Thankfully, we
have resolved our differences and look
forward to a new beginning.”
McIlroy and Stoll began dating in
2015 and tied the knot in April 2017 at
Ashford Castle in Ireland. They wel-
comed daughter Poppy Kennedy McIl-
roy on Aug. 31, 2020, in Jupiter, Florida.

McIlroy, 35, filed divorce documents
in Palm Beach County, Florida, on
May 13, days ahead of the PGA Champi-
onship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louis-
ville, Kentucky, where he finished tied
for 12th place at 12-under.

Now, days before the first round of
the U.S. Open got underway in North
Carolina, McIlroy said he and Stoll have
settled their differences and both “look
forward to a new beginning.”
The third-ranked golfer in the world
has not won a major since 2014. He last
won the U.S. Open in 2011 at Congres-
sional Country Club in Bethesda, Mary-
land. McIlroy is one of the favorites to
win the tournament, according to
BetMGM odds.

Katie Ledecky, the greatest female
swimmer in history, is known for win-
ning Olympic gold medals in the most
impressive fashion. But something few
might be aware of is what happens
when she comes into the post-race
press conference, where she spends
quite a bit of time deflecting attention
from herself and focusing on her com-
petitors.

So how does a person who would
rather talk about others than herself ac-
tually write a book – about herself?
“You may have picked up on it that I
did deflect a little bit by talking about all
the people that have played such an in-
strumental role in my life,” Ledecky said
during a recent interview as she dis-
cussed her new memoir, the fabulously
titled “ Just Add Water,” which was pub-
lished Tuesday by Simon & Schuster.
“I guess that actually is talking about
myself,” she acknowledged, “but I really
do feel like I’m the product of all the peo-
ple around me, the people who have
come before me, definitely my grand-
parents, my parents, my brother, my
aunts and uncles, cousins. Really I don’t
think I would be the swimmer I am with-
out them. So it was great to be able to
reflect on that and share a lot of their
stories.”
This is a big week for the 27-year-old
Ledecky. In addition to the debut of her
first book, she will compete at the U.S.

Olympic swimming trials in Lucas Oil
Stadium in Indianapolis (yes, a pool has
been built inside an indoor football sta-
dium) where she is expected to qualify
for her fourth U.S. Olympic team in mul-
tiple events.

Ledecky will be one of the most-
watched athletes at the Paris Games,
where she will try to add to her Olympic
cache of seven gold medals and three
silvers. While she likely will be favored
to win gold in the women’s 800 and
1,500 freestyle events as she did in To-
kyo three years ago, she will not go un-
challenged as younger swimmers who
grew up idolizing her are now some of
her top rivals.

But first, she’s dishing out some valu-
able advice in her new book, which in
many ways is the perfect primer for par-
ents and their athletic children.

As she details her childhood at a
neighborhood pool in the suburbs of
Washington, D.C., she had no aspira-
tions of going to the Olympics. She was
swimming just for fun.
“I’ve seen it with teammates that
they tell the story of how right when
they started swimming, they wrote in a
first-grade paper that they wanted to go
to the Olympics, or somebody declared
that they were going to be an Olympian
when they won the 25 free at age 8,” she
said.
“That was never me and that was
never my family. I loved swimming and I
definitely fell in love with it right from
the start but I played other sports. I was
pretty decent at basketball and soccer
and was competitive and loved being
active, so I loved all these things I was
doing.”
As for swimming, she said, “I
watched it on TV but when I watched
swimming, I never thought I would be at
that level. I thought that that was some
other realm, I thought that’s so far off
and it wasn’t really until I started qual-
ifying for these bigger and bigger meets
that all of a sudden qualifying for Olym-
pic trials was the next meet and at that
point, it came into the picture and I
learned how you qualify for the Olym-
pics.”
But, she said, “It wasn’t the goal from
a young age. And so I think that is an im-
portant message, it’s a message that
you don’t have to be great right from the
get-go, you don’t even have to have that
goal right from the get-go, there are dif-
ferent journeys that everyone takes.”
For anyone looking for tabloid drama
or even a hint of scandal, this isn’t the
book for you. It’s just the opposite, a de-
lightful escape from our rancorous
world to a place where hard work pays
off and dreams do come true.
“I feel very fortunate that I have had a
very happy life and no major injury or
huge setback or abuse or anything in my
life that has derailed me from the path
that I’ve wanted to take,” Ledecky said.
“When I started writing this, I knew it
would be a very positive story.
“Having that gold medal, seeing the
way that it makes little kids smile, older
people smile, it can light up somebody’s
face, and so just that impact is some-
thing that’s very meaningful to me and
if the book can be a small part of adding
to that, then that’s great and means a lot
to me.”
Swimming more than fun for Ledecky
Katie Ledecky won the women’s 800
freestyle final during the Tokyo
Olympic Summer Games in 2021.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Call: (800) 397-0070
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – This is where
Willie Mays was born, raised and
launched his Hall of Fame baseball ca-
reer.

This is where the Birmingham Black
Barons played in the Negro Leagues, the
only league that permitted Mays to play
professionally.

This is where Martin Luther King Jr.
preached at the 16th Street Baptist
Church.

This is where four little girls were
killed on a Sunday morning in a bomb-
ing by the Ku Klux Klan.

This is where the Civil Rights Move-
ment crested in the most segregated
city in the country.

This is where white supremacist Bull
Connor turned police dogs and high-
powered fire hoses on peaceful protes-
ters.

This is the home of 114-year-old Rick-
wood Field, the oldest professional
baseball park in the United States,
where the Black Barons played and rac-
ism could be forgotten for at least nine
innings.

Now, 76 years since Mays helped lead
the Black Barons to the 1948 Negro
League World Series as a 17-year-old,
Major League Baseball is playing its first
game at Rickwood with the San Francis-
co Giants playing the St. Louis Cardinals
at 7:15 p.m. EDT Thursday (Fox).
“This is such a blessing, I can’t be-
lieve it,” the Rev. Bill Greason, 99, one of
only two living Negro League players
from 1920 to 1948 and a recipient of the
Congressional Gold Medal, told USA
TODAY Sports. “This is a place where I
grew up, and a place where so many
things happened here. Blacks were not
allowed to play any place around here.

Blacks weren’t allowed to do a lot of
things around here. There was a rich
side and a poor side. I was on the poor
side. But here we are, all of these years
later, together, celebrating history.

Thank God I’ve been able to live this
long to see it.”
Greason will be honored by throwing
out the first pitch.

Mays, who spent three years playing
at Rickwood, died Tuesday after bat-
tling health issues for more than a year.

Still, the pageantry will be powerful
with Mays’ son, Michael, on hand, along
with his godson, home run champion
Barry Bonds; Hall of Famers Reggie
Jackson, Derek Jeter and David Ortiz;
and future Hall of Fame manager Dusty
Baker.

The families and ancestors of those
who played in the Negro Leagues from
1920 to 1948 will be on hand – with 10
families representing the Negro
Leagues Family Alliance – and 59 for-
mer Negro League players will be hon-
ored.
“This is a seminal moment in Negro
League history, and in many ways, this
is larger than life,” said Bob Kendrick,
president of the Negro Leagues Baseball
Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. “We
will have a collective eye of baseball
world dedicated to salute the Negro
Leagues. And to do it at Rickwood Field,
a place with history so rich, a place
where a young Willie Mays got his start
with the Black Barons, what Henry Aar-
on did here, what Ernie Banks did, how
they all validated the talent in the Negro
Leagues.
“When these players walk onto the
field, they’re going to feel the spirits of
those legendary stars come back
through life. That’s what made the ‘Field
of Dreams’ game so special in Iowa. But
that was a movie with a game played on
a movie set. That was a reel. This is
REAL life.”
There will be tears shed in memory of
Mays, tears of the painful memories of
segregation in this country and tears of
euphoria with the gathering of the Ne-
gro Leagues Family Alliance, with many
meeting for the first time.
“I can’t wait to meet and talk to Bill
Greason,” said Sean Gibson, the great
grandson of legendary Josh Gibson,
considered the greatest player in Negro
Leagues history. “He’s one of the only
few living people who saw Josh Gibson
play. I’ll get some good stories about
Josh. I don’t get actual players who
played against Josh, and now I get to
pick his brain about my great grandfa-
ther. For me to talk to an actual person
who saw my grandfather play is my
highlight there.”
Gibson, co-founder of the Negro
Leagues Family Alliance with the Buck
Leonard family, plans to lobby MLB offi-
cials during their luncheon Wednesday
about an annual Negro Leagues Day on
May 2, commemorating the start of the
Negro Leagues in 1920.

MLB deputy commissioner Dan Ha-
lem and Tony Clark, executive director
of the Major League Baseball Players
Association, are scheduled to speak and
provide a substantial grant for the alli-
ance.
“It’s going to be like a mini-family re-
union,” Gibson said. “We’re celebrating
this family reunion on Juneteenth and
celebrate the Negro Leagues in Birming-
ham of all places. You can’t get any more
history than this.”
There be plenty of stories flowing at
the brunch, from the days of Rickwood
to Pittsburgh to Kansas City to Detroit to
Patterson, New Jersey.

Greason, who lived across the street
from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlan-
ta, will reminisce about the Civil Rights
Movement, winning Game 7 against the
Kansas City Monarchs and leading the
Black Barons into the 1948 Negro League
World Series, becoming the St. Louis
Cardinals’ first Black pitcher, and serv-
ing two years in the Marines during
World War II.
“This was greater than baseball to be
at a place called Iwo Jima and to see the
atomic bomb fall in Nagasaki,” said
Greason, who still preaches every Sun-
day at Bethel Baptist Church. “Our life
was in danger and I returned without a
scratch. I lost two of my best friends.
“ And here I am, still breathing at 99.

I’m thankful to be able to live this long. I
was blessed to play with Willie Mays,
and to see Roberto Clemente, two of the
greatest players I ever saw in my life.”
Ron Teasley, 97, grew up in Detroit,
played in the Negro Leagues with the
New York Cubans, was signed by the
Brooklyn Dodgers to play in their farm
system, and met Jackie Robinson at
their spring training headquarters in
Vero Beach. Florida.
“My dad would take me to see those
great Negro League players because we
weren’t allowed to see the Detroit Ti-
gers,” said Teasley, the first member of
his family to attend college and graduate
from Wayne State University. “You’d
hear about Oscar Charleston and Josh
Gibson and the way folks bragged about
them. I had such great admiration for
the Negro Leagues.
“What impressed me so much was
the love these guys had for the game. My
favorite was Buck Leonard. My father’s
favorite was Turkey Stearnes. My father
idolized him. He came to my house one
day and my father was so overjoyed he
was late for work, and he was never late
for work.”
Teasley’s father was worried when
Teasley went to play baseball in the
Deep South. Teasley had never been to
the South, and when he arrived he was
warned by his teammates to be ex-
tremely cautious.
“You were afraid when you got
stopped by the police, so the players told
me what to do,” Teasley said. “They told
me you’re going to get stopped, and you
better say the right terms. You better say
the word ‘Sir.’ And they’re always going
to ask you where you’re from.
“When you got stopped, you told
them what you’re doing there, and
they’d always say, ‘Where’s Satchel
Paige? Where’s Satchel?’ We’d say, ‘He’s
waiting for us at the ballpark.’ Everyone
knew Satchel.”
Teasley is most proud of his impact
as a teacher in the world of education,
while also serving in the Navy during
World War II, and meeting President Ba-
rack Obama at the White House.

His greatest claim to fame as a ball-
player, he says, is hitting a triple off
Paige during an exhibition game at De-
quindre Park in Detroit.
“I was a utility player, and I guess I
knew my place when I was supposed to
start one game for the Negro League Cu-
bans,” Teasley said. “Well, when Minnie
Minoso arrived, he did not bring his uni-
form. So, guess whose uniform they
gave him?”
Teasley, who never played at Rick-
wood, always wonders how long the Ne-
gro Leagues would have flourished if the
Dodgers had not integrated baseball in
1947 with Jackie Robinson, and two
months later when Cleveland signed
Newark star Larry Doby.
“We were kind of concerned when he
signed,” Teasley said, “because we
knew that pretty much meant the end of
the Negro Leagues. Fans stopped com-
ing to our games. It was a happy time,
but a sad time, too.”
The Negro Leagues were never the
same, but the memories will last forev-
er, passed on to generations and genera-
tions.

The Giants-Cardinals game, with
players wearing Negro League jerseys,
culminates a tribute to Rickwood and
the Negro Leagues. This comes in the af-
termath of Negro Leagues stats being
formally incorporated into MLB stats
and with retirement benefits paid to all
living players.

They had Play Ball clinics for local
Boys and Girls Clubs and Nike RBI pro-
grams; a symposium with financial ad-
vice for Black-owned businesses; a mi-
nor league baseball game and a celebri-
ty softball game filled with former stars.

Folks in Birmingham, with nearly
$6 million spent in renovating Rick-
wood Field, are hoping this becomes an
annual event.

Others are hoping MLB plays this an-
nual game in different Negro League
ballparks, like refurbished Hinchliffe
Stadium in Patterson, New Jersey,
where Doby played, or Hamtramck Sta-
dium in the Detroit area.

There, of course, is the eternal hope
that the Rickwood Game spurs interest
that could lead to an increase of Black
players in today’s game. It’s appalling to
think there are just as many former Ne-
gro League players from 1920 to 1948
alive (Greason and Teasley) as active
Black players who will be on the field
(Masyn Winn of the Cardinals and Jor-
dan Hicks of the Giants).

Just 5.7% of all players on opening-
day rosters and injured lists this year are
Black, the lowest percentage since 1955,
according to USA TODAY Sports’ re-
search.
“This is a great platform, now we’re
hoping there will be a lot of change after
this,” said Gibson, who also is advocat-
ing for the MVP award to be named after
his great grandfather.
“There have been a lot of great strides
made. Now, it’s time to see more.”
