2.-CC. ID 26-1158 RESOLUTION - Naming the park to be located at Veterans Boulevard and Barstow Avenues “Cruz Bustamante Park”
Councilmember Karbassi announced this is the item to rename a park in northwest Fresno after someone who is from the Valley. Cruz Bustamante grew up on the west side in San Joaquin, attended Tranquility High School, and later graduated from Fresno State. And he's a person who, while he has not been in office for just over a couple of decades, he rose from the ranks of Assembly quickly, becoming the Speaker, serving this community in Fresno at the state, and then became Lieutenant Governor under Governors Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. And, in that time, built a lot of important partnerships and delivered a lot of important resources to the Valley. I know oftentimes when you leave office they forget about you, but we've not forgotten about Cruz. We've not forgotten about the work he's done. And given that this park is going to be a new park located right at the base of Veterans Boulevard, which was a major project I was proud to work on with this City to accomplish, that is the bridge between the west side and the rest of Fresno. I can think of no other person more fitting than Cruz Bustamante. So, I do encourage my colleagues to vote and support this item. I appreciate that. And I do want to point out that more than likely this is going to change in November, but as of today, Cruz Bustamante is the highest ranking Latino statewide elected official in the history of this state.

He is truly a trailblazer, and he did all of that without having the advantages my generation has today. He is a trailblazer and he deserves to be honored and I'm proud to lead that effort.
